What would I need to rebuild the pumpkin? What would be a reasonable price on labor (assuming I remove the unit)?

What would be involved in adding a LSD? What is the difference between an LSD and trac-loc (if any)?

LSD = Limited Slip Differential

Trac-lok = Ford's name for an LSD

Just thought I'd help you out.

You'd atleast need the gear you plan to put in it, and an install kit (carrier bearings, ring gear bolts, carrier shims)

As far as the rest of it goes... idk.. never did an IRS 8.8

Not changing gears. However, gonna get the differential rebuilt and thought I might as well throw and LSD in it. Just don't know much about them.

Thanks for the reply...

if you are looking to spend as little as money as possible pay someone to put a trac lock in it and replace the bearings. I replaced my unit as a whole and it was a pain in the arse. Looking back I would have saved alot of time and money just to have someone install the trac lock in the stock pumpkin for me, with it still on the car. just my $.02

If you have it out, you do want to up-grade to a deeper gear.
Just installed 4.10s and love them.

Mileage change is not noticeable , but seat in the pants is very noticeable :D

Call local shops to get a labor rate.

As far as pulling it out its easy if you do the one wheel method.

If I recall correctly, It's going to cost me between 6-800 to install a 3.55 or 3.73 Trac-Loc with new parts.

There's a tool that you can buy to do it, but the price of the tool and labor is about the same. So, if you're only going to do 1 unit like me, you may get mad enough to forget about it for now. :p

If you want to do it cheap just for the benifit of a Traction-Lok, then pick up a low mileage T-Bird IRS pumpkin and it'll bolt in. They come with either 3.07 or 3.27 gears like us but with a Traction-Lok...
Almost 4300 posts and you didn't think of searching??? You need to step out of the politics section for a minute or two and try the search! ;)

Call Max @ 5star. I got all the parts including gears and trac lok from him. If your going to rebuild the whole thing the standard 8.8 master kit will work and you just have to add the side bearing and seals. IIRC I paid $350 for labor. That's with dropping off the car and picking it up done. Obviously it will be less if you remove the pumpkin yourself.

A trac lok is Fords name for their clutch style LSD. There are others types with varying design and price ranges.

OK here is my breakdown:

Used 3.73s in PERFECT shape: $60
Used, freshly rebuilt Trac Lok with extra clutches installed: $90
FRPP rear end gasket, bearing kit: $85
FRPP axle seals and bearings: $30
Friction modifier and oil: $20
Purple VSS gear: $5
Labor + D/S install: $300

So $590 all together.
And its really a good idea to do gears while they are in there. Really makes a big difference on mod motors.

thinking about doing this....would center secton from a mustang 8.8 work? I have a spare housing around with a burnt clutches...would i just put the center section in my IRS housing? ofcourse after rebuilt, new clutches bearings etc...BTW i would neeed 28 spline correct?

I already have a rear diff out and on the floor in my garage...might as well swap right? plus i really want LSD and atleast a 3.55 gear that and my housing in my mark is leaking

Or you could buy a fully set up t-brid pumpkin used. I paid $375 for my pumpkin with 3.73s and a trac-loc. Granted it's a cast iron unit, but for the price you can't beat it.

And it's as easy as swapping the old one out and the new one in.

i just want to make sure that i will be able to use the mustang 8.8 center section in the lincoln IRS housing i want to make sure the axle shafts go in etc...

I did my gear swap and rebuild and i used a carrier housing from the center section out of a fox. It works fine but there is a difference in the spider gears. Since the fox uses c-clips to hold in the axles there are no grooves cut into the inside diameter of the gear for the snap rings used in our mark CV axles to snap into. I've heard early carriers dont have them but later models do. I still installed it figuring there is no way the axle could move nearly enough to ever effect anything. But thats the deal
