When I go over bumps, i hear a rattling noise coming from the engine bay more specifically the drivers side. Like metal on metal. I looked to see if there's anything loose, but nothing to be found. Any idea's where to start looking?

Suspension, possibly. My car makes front end noise over bumps. My cause is the sway bar links. Kinda sounds like metal rattling. Makes me feel like im driving a beater

Sway bar mounts, sway bar links, ball joints. Those seem to be the general cause of clunks.

How important is it to replace sway bar links and mounts? Not that I'm ignoring it, just want to know if it can wait a little while longer.

+1
As long as they dont break, you probably wont notice them too much, except for the noise. Mine have had slight play for 10s of thousands of miles. Im just now getting ready to replace them (sorry LS lol)

You're in luck, I have my old worn out Sway Bar Bushings up for sale !
They are OEM !

If it's the balljoints then the car will eventually become unstable on the road. If it's the swaybar mounts or links then just replace them when you got the cash and time. Worse case scenario your car will feel like a towncar and make noise until they get replaced.

I do notice a lot more vibration and the car is unable to maintain a straight driving position. It wants to shift to either side of the road (flat road). Some vibration in the steering wheel also when going over bumps.

That might be more than sway bar links. The sway bar links only come into play when cornering. If handling is affected it might be ball joints. Sway bar links can be noisy in normal operation, but not affect performance unless heavy cornering. I would make sure that the ball joints are ok. My 02 needed lowers at 60K.

Well, given that extra tidbit of information, I'd look at the following in this order:

Ball Joints, Inner Tie-rod, Outer-Tie Rod, suspension arm bearings

There's a very slight chance the upper/lower suspension arm bearings, where they bolt to the car, could be whipped. But that seems to be somewhat rare. Ball joints seem to be very common. My money is on the ball joints.

I do know that the right upper control arm has to be replaced. I just got both inner tie rods done in may of last year. But I'll definitely do more poking around underneath to see what I find. Will keep you guys updated.

my swaybar links we're my rattle... CHASED THE FOR MONTHS... one broke, then the other.. then kept coming loose after replacing... Finally after learning to tighten with the car on the ground, and getting creative with a floor jack to tighten (and some locktite) rattle gone, rides better than new!!! and this was after i thought (sounded like) the entire front end was falling off... Dont overlook them

Glad you said that, both of mine were tightened on a lift.

Intresting I have a slight rattle as well I may have to look at those I thought it would be the sway bar bushing that I had replace a little over a year ago.

did my bushings a few years but it didn't really help... Mine was so bad my wife wouldn't even drive it... sounded like a ball joint that was going to go any minute (it wasn't, I checked all critical components as i was driving).

01V6 150k miles

replaced sway bar bushings, end links, and steering end links, and one front wheel bearing this year, all noise now gone. Just like new.
