Hey guys, I was driving home this evening on I-95 doing about 70, when I started shuffling through songs, I heard a high pitch (whistle?) type noise coming from what sounded like the rear passenger side. It was a hard sound to explain. I shut off the radio and rolled down the passenger window to listen more closely, and smelled a burning smell, not sure if it was coming from my LS or not. I kept going and a few seconds later the sound and the smell stopped completely for the rest of the 20 mile trip home? I think my LS is haunted because this is the 2nd random happening in the past couple days, lol! Anyone know what this could of been? I have a 2000 V8. Thanks!

Sorry can't help ya there,

I only get "Random Weird Sound Coming From Rear" after some Beef and Bean Burritos.

Is it sort of a humming sound? That could be a wheel bearing. A whining sound could be your rear differential. As for the smell...I have no idea. Maybe a sticking brake caliper could cause a smell and whine

I would say more of a whine over a hum but I don't really know how to describe it. I heard it for a few seconds yesterday and that was it. Didn't hear it at all today on my commute to work. Weird...

Were there other cars around you at the time? I've had a few occasions where I hear the most god-awful sound and think to myself "oh crap, that's coming from my car" only to realize it was coming from the car next to me or in front of me...

Yeah I'v had that happen too. I'm pretty sure this sound in particular was coming from my car though. Completely clueless as to what it may have been

was your ac running??? sounds stupid but make sure your rear vents are cracked just a little...

if not, you'll need to pen point either where its coming from, or the only times it happens

Speed, time driven, pitch (sound) change at all, constant or in motion, etc...

The LS has a vent system, no need to crack the rear windows. Air from the cabin vent into the trunk. From there it vents out at the back of the trunk, left and right. There is some resistance still. If you open the moon roof, you'll get noticeably more airflow from the dash vents (unless it is set to recirculate).

In any event, I thought he said he opened his window and still heard it for a little while?

Side note: My Ranger has the sliding back glass. With the AC blower on high, there is a whistling sort of sound from an air leak in the seal for the sliding glass. Setting the AC to max (recycle) stops it.

Yes the A/C was on but it was coming from the outside, I'm pretty sure. I'll check my rear vents though.

It was coming from the rear of the passenger side of the car. I was going approx. 70, the sound was a high pitch. I was on the highway at the time, so I was in motion. I heard it for a few seconds rolled my window down to listen, and it stopped. Haven't heard it since..

I was referring to the vent controller (open close thing) next to the vent... controller for each passenger to stop air blowing from the vent... if open just a little, it while whistle...

Probably not it, but worth checking

Sorry, I completely misunderstood.

The cabin exhaust vents in the trunk are creepy. I feel like bugs and debris could get up in there. But I suppose not...

Anyways it sounds like a sticking caliper, I had one stick once after doing my brakes - it never happened again though. Just burned some pad down.

Make one thread and post all your concerns in there. Cars make tons of noises that's normal. You will know when something is really wrong.

Looks like it would be hard for bugs to get past the screens, but they could probably find a way. Of course, they could find a way through almost anywhere else too.

sticky caliper guide pins could explain your sound and maybe even your smoke from up front...

Thanks Rell!

My "issues" are so sporadic and random. I don't attempt to flood but if someone saw a thread that said "my array of issues" no one would read it, lol
