Hey guys, I attempted to post a previous thread, seems like I lost connection and couldn't post it. Anyway, I was looking for some advice as far as common problems on the LS. I am looking to purchase one in the 04 and up range soon, and I have read about the coil problem, what are some other things to look for in these? How to spot them, etc.? What service records should I look for, as far as work that was done on them? Any other input is appreciated, thanks.

Some off the top, a real common one, the coils will go.If coil #4 starts failing, your ls will prob go in to fail safe. If you take it to the dealer, they'll tell you your throttle body is bad or your gas pedal, when it's only the coils.

Another common issue is the tranny selenoid, your tranny might start shifting hard or feel like it's slipping.

Some others have had problems with their ac, their dccv going bad or something along those lines, search on that.

window regulators also.

haha it funny that the video 05 LS8 posted earlier is about noobs posting things that have already been discussed, not searching, and not reading the stickies lol

i think that video need to be a sticky, or at least something you have to watch before the system will let you start any new threads for the first time

haha yea it does need to be a sticky but again its not like noobs are going to read the thread, alex had to point out a sticky and he probably still didn't read it (even though the video says he should :shifty:)

Thanks I really do appreciate it and I recently saw that thread, I have been browsing through it as well. What do you mean by "fail safe" ?
 
This is the actual function of the fail safe mode, from the user's manual
What you should know about fail-safe cooling
If the engine coolant supply is depleted, this feature allows the vehicle to
be driven temporarily before incremental component damage is incurred.
The “fail-safe” distance depends on ambient temperatures, vehicle load
and terrain.
How fail-safe cooling works
If the engine begins to overheat:
• The engine coolant temperature
gauge will move to the H (hot)
area.
• The symbol will
illuminate.
• The symbol will illuminate.
• The symbol will illuminate.
If the engine reaches a preset over-temperature condition, the engine
will automatically switch to alternating cylinder operation. Each disabled
cylinder acts as an air pump and cools the engine.
When this occurs the vehicle will still operate. However:
• The engine power will be limited.
• The air conditioning system will be disabled.
Continued operation will increase the engine temperature and the engine
will completely shut down, causing steering and braking effort to
increase.
Once the engine temperature cools, the engine can be re-started. Take
your vehicle to a service facility as soon as possible to minimize engine
damage.
When fail-safe mode is activated
You have limited engine power when in the fail-safe mode, so drive the
vehicle with caution. The vehicle will not be able to maintain high-speed
operation and the engine will run rough. Remember that the engine is
capable of completely shutting down automatically to prevent engine
damage, therefore:
1. Pull off the road as soon as safely possible and turn off the engine.
2. Arrange for the vehicle to be taken to a service facility.
3. If this is not possible, wait a short period for the engine to cool.


If your coil #4 is bad it will cause interference and make the car think it needs to go into fail safe. When It happened to me the car would shake( a bad coil) and it went into fail safe right before the freeway. I turned it off and back on and it was normal again but still had the shaking from the miss fires(coil) and went into failsafe again soon after. I changed out the coil on the driver side, farthest away from the driver, with coil 4 and it did not go into failsafe again, got that info from memebers here. I changed out all the coils a little while after and problem solved.

Wrong failsafe mode.
Interference from coil #4 can cause the car to go into ETC failsafe, not failsafe cooling.
ETC failsafe is when the PCM thinks there's something wrong with the gas pedal or the throttle body, so it sets the throttle to idle position and won't honor any input from the gas pedal to open the throttle.
