my steering wheel does not return to center when.. it feels kind of stiff to turn. i checked my power sterring fluid, and it is full, but black.
what does this mean?
what can i do?

Well if its black you may want to replace it. Also there is a boot where the shaft meet the rack. If it dries out it can cause resistance. Silicon grease under the boot will help there a lot. Other things may be bad ball joints.

Could also be a binding ball joint.
Binding steering is a definate trouble sign!

You really dont want to have a ball joint failure while driving, even at parking lot speeds ALOT of damage occurs when ball joint fails.

Tiffs car had a binding steering for about a week before her lower ball joint popped out.

Dont procrasintate, atleast get the car checked out ASAP.

If the front end is tight could it still be a bad bj even though it doesn't make any noise? Mine does the same thing but i have clean fluid and a tight steering components.

Any pics of the boot? I looked for it before but got confused.

Also, Dis-connect the varible ps assit connecter on the ps pump..I have yet to do this but will once i get it back on the road after the blend door repair.

Time for the Turkey Baster to suck out all that bad crude, reill with Mercon 5, do a couple lock to lock twists on the wheel, suck out and refill again, and repeat one more time and that will take care of the black part.

Nope, but if you look right where the shaft meets the rack you will see it. Its more like a hat, just lift up the edge and apply silicone grease. May not be your problem, but in my case my steering made noise and would not return to center. I have a custom shaft with a u-joint and other parts. I thought that was the source of the noise once I ruled out the clock spring. Odds are its not it, but I thought I would throw it out there anyway, just incase! Mine got so bad I hated to drive for fear of something in the steering failing.

I'll check that. Thing is though that when i pulled it out of the garage onto a 1/2" of snow it was nice n easy like i want it to be.

same thing with mine. it feels normal on snow/ice .

in the event that it is the ball joint(s) how much do they typically cost to replace?

turkey baster....that takes a while doesnt it?....worth a try, depeneding how much a shop charges to flush a power stering system.

Just remove the oulet side of the P/S cooler line and drain with the car running, it might take 3 guys for this but have one turn the wheel lock to lock and one pouring fluid in while your down there manageing the outlet line. Do this till it run's clean and reconect the line. I do the same procedure for the transmission. As far as fluid, I'm not to sure about merc 5. If it work's or not but I just use STP P/S fluid.

by definition a "Binding ball joint" wont be loose by any stretch of the imagination because it's "in a bind".

Loose ball joints are another story.. but one that is binded up, wont be loose.

the dealer says to use mercon V for power steering.

For the trans. There is no need for Mercon V in the PS system. I dont recall there every being a TSB on that too.

I've been using Mercon V in my '93 for a few years, now. I haven't had any trouble, and it still has the original rack.

If my bj's were binding it would still be hard to steer on a 1/2" of snow right? Thats the only time i experienced how it was really suposed to turn.

Yes and no. When turing you have resistance from two points if the ball joint is bad, the joint and the tire. One snow you took half of the resistance out. And who knows, you been dealing with tuff steering, that little less resistance may feel normal to you but still tight to someone with normal steering. If you get what I mean?

i found the problem, my ps pump failed internaly. Sadly the pressure from the new pump caused the seals on my rack and pin. and both pressure line hoses to fail. So i have a all new system now. It cost me 800 parts and labor at pep boys...ill never take my car there again by the way.
long story

don't just throw parts at it check the ball joints first you can disconect the tie rods and see if the wheel turns free and do you have any air ride problems
in a gen2 they use the same processor
