I am installing new catalytic converters on my 2001 ls. Came to a stop when i reached the nuts that hold the exhaust to the manifold. One nut comes off very easily, while the other seems impossible. Am i missing something?? Specialty tools required??

You probably need some penetrating oil to release the nut from the bolt.

??

i cannot get a socket or a wrench on the nut at all. wondering if there is a special tool maybe

All of 4 of the nuts are easily accessible on mine. I believe they are 15mm but you will need a deep well socket. And make sure the exhaust is supported.

If you really can't get in there with a long extension and deep well socket, you can remove the pre-cat o2 sensors.

You have a V6 OP most likely has a V8 stuff will be different.

After looking at the diagram in the ford parts catalog for the v8 exhaust, from the rear section of the manifolds back, it looks like the v8 and v6 are the same. So I would venture to say that the location of the flanges and nuts are the same

i had to use (from the bolt to the gun) a XXmm deep well socket, wobble bit, short extension (3"-4"), wobble bit, long extension (8"-10"), impact gun.

biggest PITA i've seen in a while.

also had to soak them in PB blaster every couple of hours for a day.
