So has anyone ever tried painting th intake tube to try and keep it cooler? Isn't there something you can do to keep it somewhat resistant to high temperatures, without having to wrap it in bubblewrap?

Well I have used ceramic barrier paint on a couple of other metal intake tubes.
one brand is www.techlinecoatings.com. I used one of these on the last intake tube I painted and their thermal dispersant the intake pipes.

Ceramic coating would be the way to go... the stuff they use on exhaust headers and such. Trust me, the air isn't in the intake tube long enough for the temperature of the surface to heat the air significantly to warrant any type of temperature control.

This is true.
