painting bumper

Haha this one hits home for me seeing that I lost my front bumper today. Maaco didn't rescrew my bumper back on and it got caught on the liscense plate holder lol.

But these would be your steps

Remove bumper
Prep bumper (I guess most people would wetsand the bumper, prime it, whatever)
Paint bumper
Install bumper again

But unless my 93 is an exception, theres 3 screws on each side of the bumper cover in the wheel wells that need to be undone, then the bumper (including grille, you may want to paint that anyway) should slide right now.

that sux that your bumper fell off. i already have the bumper off but could you or somone less explain more in detail the preping of the bumper?
 
Wrong guy to ask. What color is the car? Because then the next question would be, is your chrome trim in good shape? If not, would you match it with the body color of the car? If so you'd have to take extra time with the trim.
 
First use a dewaxer or some type of cleaning product to remove any oils or waxes. Helps prevent fisheyes and pulling. Second, dry and tape off any pieces you don't want painted. Third, wet sand entire piece(320-400 grit is nice, its up to you) Use gatorback paper or equivilant wet sand type paper. If your bumper is heavy scratched you can start with 180- 220 grit. Rinse and dry, checking that no areas were missed. Clean off with same product as first used and dry again. An air hose really gets all the water out of the seams and crevases, its no fun to spray something and have it ruined by a splatter of water shooting out of a crack. Prime, repeat above steps. Pull tape and re-apply new tape. Apply finish coats and pull tape. Everybody paints differently. Some save wet sanding only for final coat, some start with lower grit, some higher. This is just a basic run through for you. Do more, do less. Prep is important. Do it right the first time. Recap; Clean, tape, sand, clean, prime, sand, clean, re-tape, paint, relax and enjoy.:D If this all fails call Maaco.:eek:
 
If I did all the prep work and priming myself, could I just buy the paint myself and take it to a shop (or Maaco) and have them paint it? How much more expensive is it if you want clearcoat? I'm talking just the bumper here.

I'm worried about the color not matching, so wouldnt it be better to order the paint by paint code from Ford?
 
If you bring it to a shop they'll supply the matching paint if you request it. Call around and ask for paint prices. After regular quote, ask for adjusted price if you remove and prep yourself. This keeps them honest.:shifty: Maaco just sent a mailer saying around 250 for the grand opening sale price for a whole car so I'd guess it should be pretty cheap. Until you get to the painting, prep is easy. Its just time consuming( to do it right) but worth it.
