Paint Job

Yes. Generally little to no-prep is done. One coat and your lucky if they apply the clear coat although in this case they use an "integrated cleat coat". No dings are fixed.

In a good paint job the majority of the work is in the prep, its also the most time-consuming part of the job. You could do all the prep yourself and remove all the lights, trim, etc.... then take it in for the paint coat. In the end it may look better than what you have now, but even still it may not last.

A good pain job done at a reputable shop will be from 2k to 5k depending on color, coats, damage repair, etc...

I too want to go all black. A really good black enamel paint can be used to skip the clear coat.

In my case I will do what they often do to vintage restores. Every panel that can come off will be removed and painted one at a time. So fenders, doors, hood, trunk lid will be removed and painted. With simple colors you can do this. With complex paints, like pearl, you can not since the panels will not blend. Another advantage to panel removal is getting the paint in all the right places. So far it looks like I may just do the paint job myself.
 
Yeah that does sound like a pretty in depth paint job. I wanted a all black paint job, but I kinda wana see what a two tone paint job would look like.
 
For reference, I was talking to the owner of a pretty reputable paint shop here in NM. They charge $1650 for a good paint job, or $2k for a color change. The price includes up to 8 hours of body work before the actual paint is applied..

Thats not true!:shifty: My uncle had one of those paint jobs once,The paint stayed on the car, It looked like crap and the paint faded where the primer was showing through, But it lasted longer than 500 mins(8.3hrs) It lasted almost the whole day!!!:bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl:
 
just remember, you get what you pay for! When I had my Mustang SVO I got a few quotes to have it painted. It was already black and the body was 98% straight. Around $2,000 - $3,000 is about right for a good basic paint job and prep.

Those earl Shieb jobs are great if you are going to be selling a car rather quickly. Now you might be able to speak with the actual painter himself at Shieb and talk to him. Offer him a $100 tip if he takes his time and does a good job. Those guys know how to lay on paint, they are just concerned about how many cars they can get done in a day. They also seem to love bondo! All about the $$$,

To show you how old Im getting...I remember an Earl Shieb commercial where Earl Shieb himself said: "I will paint any car, any color, for $29.95.":bowrofl:
 
Wow! I remember him saying $99.95. When was the $29.95? How old are you guys? LOL.
 
I think I'll find a shop that has expensive prices and this other one and ask what there methods are and then compare.

I figured it was to good to be true.

How can you explain the lifetime warranty though?

The money that it cost them, They can paint your car crapy a couple of times and still make a profit!!:D
 
"Lifetime Warranty" has a limit. In Wisconsin a non specified lifetime warranty has only a 7 year life. I found this out when I kept destroying my Trek Y33 mountain bike frames. They are carbon fiber. If the frame was over 7 years old, no replacement yet Trek advertises a "lifetime warranty".

Then you have legal wording. The paint may have a lifetime warranty -- of the paint! So when the paint starts to flake, well, that was its life....

Other states have other limits. In the end it comes down to the company.
 
what a bunch of cheap sh1p$, I took my wife's PT crapper in for a new 1/4 panel. They bondoed the hell out of it and charged my insurance 2500.00 bucks! They were supposed to replace the panel not bondo it. What a bunch of crooks!

When some kid on the highway wrecked the front end of my truck for me I went through the same crap. progressive was checking junkyards for headlights and wanted to bondo up my quaterpanel also. luckily i went to the ford dealer where I worked when I was younger and they let me know all the crap proggresive was trying to get away with. needless to say all my parts were ford oem except for a radiator mount. If you have proggresive and you get hit, do not go to one of their in network bodyshops. go somewhere you trust. but my truck was in the shop the same day it was hit and back a week later.
