For the past four years I've had intermittent code P0420 (catalyst inefficiency). The code shows after longer highway runs and would go away when driven around town. At inspection time I'd wait for the code to go out and then leave it off for state inspection. This has worked for the last 4 inspection cycles. For the past 2 months local driving has not gotten rid of the code. With inspection coming due before the end of July I guess I'll need to fixed it.
The car is a 2000 V6 with manual transmission with 138,000 miles. It has all original O2 sensors and cats. I plan on changing all four O2 sensors (under $140 at Rock Auto). Some makes (Denso $106 for all four) of the sensors have different sensors for auto and manual transmissions, others (Bosch $112, NTK $138, Motorcraft $141) list the same sensor for either transmission. Is there a difference? Any preference on make of sensor or should I just get the Denso's.
If the sensors don't fix the problem I'll go after the cats.
