over heating issues

so my car overheated today. it has been pissing coolant for a while but then it stopped. i filled the resivour and started her up. let her warm up and i back out of the driveway and get half way down my street and my temp gauge is past the N. my coolant level is fine, any ideas? she is only dripping coolant and its not from the rad.
 
Sounds like you now have air in the system and your going to have to fix the leak where ever it is... thats first then you have to open the fill tube right above the alt. and fill it, wait for the bubbles to stop then run it, come home and check it again, becareful as the system is presurized. sugest letting it cool down and recheck.
Fill as needed until all the air is gone.

thanks, i tried finding the leak but no luck, pretty sure its just a hose somewhere. the car is cooling down right now so ill do that right away. thanks again.
 
+1 on that. Since it was leaking, there is definitely air in the system. Just filling the reservoir won't help that. It has to be "burped". On a side note, my '96 is doing something similar, but not as bad. No leaks, but the temp gauge regularly gets up between the "O" and "R" when I'm driving to work. Now it has been in the upper 90's lately. But I have a new radiator, new cooling fan, and a new 160* thermostat. And yes, I burped it. It only does it on extremely hot days. So It just may be the heat.

After it burped, all the air in the system is out I havent had any occasion for it to go past middle of the road no matter how hot out.
Good luck. sounds like there is still a small problem that needs to be sorted out. maybe still air somewhere.

+1 for the weep hole on the waterpump.. you have to find the leak or will get much worse.. even if you burp the system, it has to maintain pressure for the coolant to properly do its job. good luck...
 
Mines running warm also.

It does fine in the morning on the way into work, but if I have to go anywhere in the afternoon, in stop and go traffic. It will go as high as "o". I did try burping but I will try again. If that doesn't work I might try a flush and refill.
It does have 227,000 miles. But that is only one problem the other problem is that when I parked the car yesterday afternoon and dropped off the critter from the vet. I had to go back out. So when I started it back up the air would only blow out of the defroster and floor vent. It's August in Atl. and it's tarzan hot. Just trying to get a grip on what parts I might need to order to save some time cause I only have the weekend to get the job done. I have also planned to change out the front bags when it got a little cooler, I have those parts.

If you have a coolant leak, it must be stopped or you will NEVER get the coolant burped completely,
as for the defroster...well...use search...you have a vac leak too

Well, the vent issues may be from a bad or worn vacumm hose, look on the manifold next to the throttlebody and look for a fat black vacumm hose that connected 2 ports and this usually is a main sorce for vacumm. I find this is one of the first peices to go bad due to heat. also check in the fender well of the passenger side(will require the removal of inner well) there are also a few peices of hose there that will and can control your AC/heat vents.

oh okay ill try that, i have a 18 volt power drill and i had a nice square socket thing for the drill but i just used it and it fit perfectly in the hole and its so tight it made the drill actually spin backwards!

You really should not use a drill. you should use the proper tool use a 1/4inch driver/wrench for sockets insert it into the hole and loosen.

not all hope is lost..
do you have a set of vice grips?
of a large set of channel locks?
there is a lip on the top of the plug that can be grabbed and used to spin it off.
I would suggest slightly tapping the top with a small hammer (NO NOT RIPPED CAMELS HAMMER EITHER)lol... just enough to break the grit in the threads and then attampt to loosen. thats my suggestion otherwise youll need a new fill tube.

Good luck with it. I know they can be stuborn just use some common sense..
 
Ok, using the 1/4 drive isn't giving full directions...you needed to give it an impac effect instead of just pulling on it, the way that's always worked is, stick the 1/4 ratchet in the cap and smack the handle the jar it loose...
Now that you've rounded the hole out, go find your pipe wrench and grab just the edge of the cap.
Then replace the cap
 
so i tried a pair of vice grips and smacked them with a giant cresent wrench and they kept popping off. i got the vice grips as tight as i could but did not work, any more help guys? lol

I have the same problem but mine is the reverse... When Im running on the freeway it gets up around the top of the R and some times just into the O. But when I get back in city and am driving in stop and go traffic its nice and at the half way point. I have replaced my whole cooling system... New radiator, fan motor, t-stat, water pump and even the over flow bottle cap. Ive though I got all the air out of the system, I even followed the directions on the fender to fill. Still no luck... And ideas?

You still have air in the system... it happened to me.. I took out the T-Stat and ran it for a monththat way and I will put it back in using hose clamps to block off the water.

After I let it run for almost ever this afternoon I think I got more air out of the system... Now it only runs in the R and gets no hotter then the top of the R. So I think Im on the right track... Once I get this thing bled I hope to God I never have to open the system ever again!!!
