ok I took my mark in for an oil change... they only wanted 24 bucks so I figured it was a good deal... the ?? is when I left I looked on the slip and they filled it with 10w-30... is that gonna mess up my car?... I know it should have 5w 30... I like in colorado though so maybe they know something to do with the altitude... I don't know... but yeah I was wondering if it's bad or not... it runs fine... infact it kinda idles smoother now... so hopefully... but thanks for the help

IN the summer it may not have been a big deal, but 10w is thicker in the winter. I would take it back and tell them to put the right stuff in, then never return.

And for $24 I doubt it's synthetic.

I agree. These are not some 70s vehicles that burn oil and such. Tolerances are very tight. 5W is the way to go. I use 5W-20 in mine.

I doubt it will cause destruction, though I suggest resisting the urge to rev the engine to high rpms on a cold day, till after the engine reaches operating temperature.

well we don't really drive that hard on it... I think it'll be ok... it doesn't get all that cold here and I have tendencies to drive like an old man (my girl makes fun of me a lot)... I just wanted to know if it'll do any damage... I know it's not that different and it's thicker... but wouldn't that be good in a way though too?

i use 5w20 in mine but it had 10w40 when i bought it. its been fine the last 10k miles and was pretty quick for a stock 95.

When the modular engines first came out and the North Carolina Highway patrol had a rash of seized engines, it was found they were serviced with higher-viscosity oil--you do that when you have hundreds of gallons of oil. Problem is on startup in cold weather. The higher viscosity oil couldn't flow into the tighter clearances, thus seizing bearings in many cases. So when the factory says use 5W-20 or 5W-30 oil, believe them. Besides, your engine get slightly better fuel mileage. NASCAR teams have found this out, too, so they've tightened clearances and have gone to lighter oil.;)

As long as you don't use a heavy 40 or 50 weight no such thing will happen.

maui police had a rash of blown up oil filters when they got their first 4.6s

Apparently you live in a warm climate! lucky you!! But it does and can happen. Not just the 4.6L, but in the north here there are always a few cases you hear about, friends and family, who blow and engine when the quicky-change place put the wrong oil in. As stated, it the cold startup - especially in a cold climate. If you on the west coast or down south, its not a big deal but it sure is up here!

That quick change place sounds bad. They should have known better. Go back to them with the owners manual and get them to do it again. Make sure they use the 'good stuff' and a new, good quality filter for your trouble! Make sure they top it up to correct level also before you leave. Once happy don't back there! Ever! Lol.
