is one type of oil better than the other? i always use the same but i've heard myths about it. i always go to a jiffy lube and get full synthetic pennzoil with a quart low and go add lucas oil mixture. what do you use?

Most oil manufacturers recommend (right on the bottle no less) to NOT use any additives with their oil. Chemists have designed the built in additive packages with just the right amount of additives for max protection. adding other additives can throw off this balance, reducing the oils effectiveness in protection.

I used to use Mobil One, but recently switched to Walmart's brand of full synthetic after reading many online oil analysis reports on how well it performs, for 1/2 the price.

if you are changing oil every 3k it realy will not matter what brand you use or if its dino, synth or full synth as long as you use the recomended viscosity.
while we are on the subj of oil, mobil has a oil that goes 15k+ miles but my ? is can the oil filter hold up for that long?

Just about every extended change oil..............

Just about every extended change oil recommends filter changes at the normal intervals. I do know that Amsoil now has a filter that is designed to last for the entire 10000 miles that they recommend, and others may as well. You have to go by the recommendations of the Oil manufacturer. Just remember this, if the oil has a SAE rating, using it will not void your warranty by law. If you ever have a manufacturer try to say that you invalidated your warranty by using XYZ branded oil and failed to use the proper drain intervals in their manuals, contact the oil manufacturer. They will back you and so will case law.

Most additives are bandaids for engines that really need a rebuild. Don't use them unless your engine is truly sick.

Millions of dollars are spent researching the perfect blend for a good brand name motor oil. Why screw up the formula by adding something mixed in a witches cauldron? This is especially true of synthetics. Adding an additive usually means you added dino oil and other stuff god and the mfg did not intend. Adding dino additives defeats the purpose of using the syn.

Many people swear by additives, but you will never see a reputable lab with test results that recommend them. The engine manufacturers spend millions to get optimum life on their products. If an additive that costs a few bucks would boost their EPA ratings or increase performance or engine life, you bet they would do it. If they recommend NOT using additives it is for a good reason and with millions of miles and dollars backing it up.

If your engine is in decent condition, you do not need anything but a good SAE API oil that meets your engine spec.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
