i just got my 02 LS about a month ago an a couple days after i got it i noticed that the oil was only reaching the bottom hole in the dip stick, since then it hasn't used any oil. Then about a week ago it was time for an oil change so i put in the recomended 6 quarts, pennzoil platinum synthetic 5w20,and its only eaching the bottom hole in the dip stick. Do ya'll think since its a used car someone could have replaced the dipstick with the wrong one at somepoint or another or could it be a bigger problem?

You don't say if you have a V8 or V6 or if you changed the oil filter. With filter it runs about 6.9 qt for the V6 and 6 qt for the V8.

Oil dipsticks aren't know for record-setting accuracy in general, but you should be OK as long as it reaches the bottom hole. You don't want it to go too far below the hole, and you don't want it to go over the top hole (overfilling is, in some ways, worse than underfilling).

Of course, this begs the question of what the conditions were when you measured the level--eg, was the car level, how long did you give the oil to run through the oil galleys to the pan, did you run the car to fill up the oil filter, did you put oil in the new filter before you put it on the car, etc?

I presumed he had a V8, but that's a good point. BTW, 1st Gen V6es take 6.5qts; 2nd Gen V6es take 6.9qts (2nd Gen V8s take 6.5qts).

Yes I have the V8, the car was level, after I took the drain plug out i went in the house for about 30 min or so, an i only ran the car for about a min or so, yes i replaced the filter.

my main concern was my brother using it to drive to louisiana from our home in mississippi, about 4 hour, so i just threw an extra quart of oil in the trunk in case the oil light comes on. Although i guess if it isn't using or leaking anything then I'm good in the first place. I'm just kind of skitzo about it cause its the only car i've ever had to buy myself.

Dont wait for the oil light to come on. Check it frequently.
