Oil change

So I'm going to change my oil here soon but just wondered if I go about it as I would any other vehicle? Judging by the coolant system it wouldn't surprise me if I had to say some ancient japanese spell while punching "666" in the door keypad just to initiate the process.

So anyhow, loosen oil pan bolt, drain, swap filter, tighten oil pan bolt, and refill with 5w20 mcraft? Or am I in for a religous experience? Thanks

I assume that by "oil pan bolt" you really mean the oil pan drain plug. If you have the V8, it make take 7 quarts instead of 6.5 to bring it to the full mark.
There is a little bit of a trick to resetting the oil change message.

As with everything else with the LS, you start by changing the COPs and plugs, then do the rest of what you said. I suggest a Wix filter and Mobil 1 oil, but you can use anything you want. Except Fram. I'd rather use a metal shell packed with valve grinding compound for an oil filter than a Fram oil filter. In my opinion, a metal shell packed with valve grinding compound would do a better job protecting the engine from damage than a Fram oil filter.

Changing the oil is a pretty nasty proposition on these. Wear gloves and old clothes as I've managed to splash myself on both oil changes.

The oil filter usually comes down on it's own regardless of your intentions.

When's the last time you've been to church? If you're scared, go to church!

Pretty straight forward process like you mentioned but do it after the engine has reached it's operating temperature. Drive it around, for example to pick up oil and filter, park it and give 'er the business.

I find it is easier to do with the engine cold (no burns). With 5W20 and 0W20, it pours just about like water hot or cold. I'm not worried about getting an extra ounce out or having it drain one minute faster.

Its no harder nor easier than almost every other car Ive done.

i do recommend getting an oil filter wrench as there is not a lot of extra room around the filter location. It can make getting the filter off nice and easy just in case the last guy who changed the oil was Bruce Banner and somebody pissed him off while he was tightening up the filter...

I'd be sure to get a new drain plug and gasket as well. Always a good measure if it hasn't been done since manufacture date.

The threads on the drain plug will strip before the thread in the pan, it's designed that way on purpose. the metal on the drain plug threads are soft metal. more often than not, it's time to replace this unit along with a fresh gasket. Not a big deal, not going to break the bank.

Also, please do not go driving around shopping, getting it up to normal operating temperature then go home and immediately drain the hot oil,
leave that kinda torture for the Jiffy lube kids ... It'll be do darn hot ... just a two or three minute idle will be fine.

Open the top fill cap first, then open the drain plug, trust me on this one!

last ... on the new filter, take a dab of "new" oil on your finger and run it around the rubber gasket before install.

... and be sure to put the drain plug back in before you attempt to add the new oil ... some people have done it.


Mobil 0W20 synth is the way to go. IMO

It's just the way I've been doing it without an issue. Try to keep it off you as much as possible, to the state of California it has been found that everything causes cancer.

No big deal but why bother with burning hot oil when just warm enough will do.
Don't forget he'll want to do a taste test sampling of the oil so he'd have to wait until it cooled down first.

Super easy IMO. Drain plug is well placed rear-ish on the pan.
