Oil Capacity Issues?

This is good to hear. I thought my local dealership might be going coo-coo. Just took the LS in for her physical. This makes the second time I've had this dealrship change the oil. First time they re-filled it with 7qt. This time I told the guy to only put 6qt. in it. He wrote it down on the work order as, "customer request 6 qt." Went to pick it up and on the invoice they wrote, "filled with 6qt. but vehicle requires 7qt." I guess their playing the better safe than sorry role. Just good to see this is not all that uncommon to hear.

Its funny this just came up while i was changing my oil. The manual does indeed say 6.5 quarts for the 03+ V8. I would think the reason your being charged for 7 quarts is because how else are you gonna get that extra 1/2 quart unless you break open another bottle. Anyway i just spent about $20 for my oil change, genuine motorcraft "long life" filter, 7 quarts of motorcraft synthetic 5-w20, 15 minutes of my time on my back. Easy as can be.

Like the other guys say, my 2004 V8 manual says 6.5 with filter.

The oil capacity of auto engines is interesting. I have seen large engines like 350 and up that use only 4 qts and I have seen small 4 bangers use more than 6qts. I think much of this is due to "styling" issues, i. e. there may not be room in the engine bay for a big crankcase. I prefer large capacities since it gives you more oil to dilute contaminants and it gives you some margin for running out.

Well my OM for my 2002 has a pasted in addendum that says 7 qts for my V6.

as far as that seeming odd, at least the V6 has a descent sized filter. I love how the old family SUV with its towing package oil pan took 5.25 gts of oil for its 3.3l v6 but the oil filter just a little bit bigger than a tomato paste can.

Usually, I fill it until it's full... and check it with the dipstick.
