No mufflers

The stock mufflers probably weigh 20-25 lbs each, just removing the mufflers you gain 4-5HP from the weight savings. You probably gain another 5 hp from the improved exhaust flow since the stock mufflers don't flow at all. And probably 3-5hp from removing the resonators. Sounds very reasonable to me.
 
I removed the silencers and mufflers from my 94, no track times from before, but it didn't feel like it picked up much of anything. It really takes 15-20hp to notice any difference in the ass dyno.
 
Alright. . . heres the skinny on weight savings and improved accelleration. I think what the guy is getting at is that the removal of the muffler takes enough weight out of the car to improve its accelleration. He suggests that this improvement is roughly equal to the what 4-5hp would produce.

Honestly, you will probably not notice the accelleration improvement from removing 50 pounds from the car. Whats worse is that you took those 50 pounds out of the back of the car, which lessens the available traction from the rear tires. In all fairness to his other claim though, the stock mufflers likely don't flow very well and replacing them with a pipe the size of the rest of the tubing on the vehicle should give some kind of HP increase, even if it is not noticeable.

As far as tips on how to do the exhaust, I've heard some wicked sounding 4V 4.6's. My suggestion would be to play off that sound by going with 2.5 mandrel bent from the cats back and simply use straight 2.5" tips. This should give a nice little cackle on the high end with an incredlibly sweet midrange sound. I can't think of any engine that had a more balanced sound than that quad cam 4.6. Enjoy!!!
 
I removed my mufflers and replaced with tips. I don't think its any faster, but it sounds faster. I like the sound at WOT but the drone between like 2 and 4k is pretty bad.
 
I know it picked up at least 10 HP maybe 15. it was definitly slower before the mods and it is breathing MUCH better, I had to disconnect the battery for a while to reset the computer because the check engine light came on after I removed the silencers. my 94 did the same thing when I removed the silencers. with the silencers on it's breathing through a 2" diameter hole and now it's breathing through a 6" hole. that is going to make more power and it doesn't take rocket scientist to figure that out.
 
Every 10lbs off the car is 1 horsepower gained. Having the weight removed off the rear of the car doesn't mean you will get less traction either.

So you're telling me my car makes 230rwhp, and I pull the seats out of my car and dyno it, it'll make 235rwhp?

And yes it does, simple physics say less weight over drive tires = less traction.

Did you dyno it? If not, how do you know what it picked up?

So your saying that if you add 500lbs of concrete to the trunk you'd get more traction, right?

So does more traction mean you go faster? No. Not at all. It depends how go about it. Does less traction mean you go slower? No. Not at all.

Its all about a happy balance. For the record, "technically" it takes around 15 HP gain to "feel" a difference -seat of the pants, i've done stupid things such as removean air silencer and "felt" a difference but i'm sure theres no way removing an air silencer netted 15 hp.

Because I know that 5 other people that rode in the car before the mods and after. all said that they could feel how much better the car was running compared to before. I'm not sure EXACTLY how much more HP was gained but it's definitly got more power that's for sure, my experience tells me that it feels like at least a 10HP gain. why the big deal anyways? I'm just saying that it runs better than before the mods. I have been racing cars for 25 years so I think I know what a 10HP gain feels like. would you?

I did more than the silencers I also removed the stock mufflers and put 24" long 3" diameter stanless tips where the mufflers went. bottom line guys is the car picked up a noticable amout of power. and it was like when I put underdrive pulleys on my 5.0 stang which was a 10-15HP. I think I know what that amount feels like.

Technically he did say removing weight is worth HP. I know exactly what he means, it's just not exactly what he said...

Adding 500lbs of concrete to the trunk would get you more traction. Why do you think people add weight to RWD cars/trucks in the snow? More traction will hook better but doesn't help top end. Which is why VHT is generally applied to the 330' or 660'..

Nope, I wouldn't know what a 10hp gain feels like in a car with 290hp. That's a 3% gain, and wouldn't be noticeable by anyone IMO. Like this guy says:

Although I think it's more like 20hp before you can actually notice a difference. I think most of the times when people feel a difference with small mods it's all in their minds. Especially when exhaust mods are involved ("it's louder so it must be faster.")

loudness has nothing to do with it man. I am not going to argue about it, I and 5 others could feel the modest power improvement. I am not some punk kid who thinks that if it's louder it must be faster. if you think that your not going to make more power when you go from pulling air from a 2" hole to a 6" hole and getting rid of the restrictive stock mufflers then you are wrong.
 
If the motor doesn't do anything with that extra air then it won't make more power. Pulling the mufflers probably did allow a bit of extra power to be net, I still don't think it would be noticeable. Tell ya what, if I find a late 95-96 LSC like I've been looking for I'll do before/after track tests, correct them for density altitude changes, and see if there's a difference there. I'm not trying to argue that your car isn't making any more power (I do have the same mods on mine even,) I just really don't think you can feel a 2-4% change in power.
 
What about going from Dynomax bullets to no mufflers, will I lose power or performance? The Bullets aren't loud enough for me and they are fully broken in. People always tell me it sounds great from the outside but inside is too quiet!
 
Well I cut off my mufflers and am still using my stock gen 2 tips. I love the sound! Sounds like a stock 98 Cobra with off road x pipe. I think the sound is more "tuned" than if i got bigger aftermarket tips.
