An ex of mine had bought a 2000 Benz (the little two seater..forget the name), Kompressor model. The thing only had 15k on it and it had to get towed from the Jersey Shore to Brooklyn, NY THREE times in the first few months she owned it for oil in the intake system/intercooler, etc. She finally got rid of the thing a few months later and bought an Acura.
Nice cars to look at, but I wouldn't take one without a warranty.

I personally would most likely investigate the documented reliability (or lack thereof) history of a particular model (i.e. Consumer Reports and other forums) then base my decision upon that instead of just one persons experience. I'm not certain I'd judge a carmakers entire lineup based upon one specific vehicle. But I agree that it's a personal choice.
