I pulled out my Pioneer AVIC-D2 headunit today to bypass the parking brake. I had it installed at Best Buy. When I took the unit out a bunch of terrible crimps were exposed. I think some of them came apart. Now my message center doesn't turn on anymore and my fuel gauge needle points straight up. Any ideas what this could be?

WOW..........they dont know what they were doing........mark viii's shouldnt be worked on by any stereo installers, ive read to many stories..........lol...........and from personal experience, they know nothing about them......i put in my kenwood in mine in ~45 mins........cutting included :D

If the Message Center is not working, then it is either the white with purple stripe wire is cut (hot when the car is in Acc or Run), or it is the Light green with purple stripe wire is cut (hot at all times). If either one of these wires are cut then the message center will not work, and the gas gauge needle will be off since the signal goes thru the Message Center, and that wire is the dark blue with light green stripe wire.

Hope this helps.

There is a fuse that has something to do with the radio gas gauge and info center, when I first got my car none of these things worked. I pulled the radio out and found that the wires had shorted on eachother causing a fuse to blow. I repalced in and the gas gauge and info center went back to normal, and the crappy radio went in the trash.

Something similar happened to me when I accidentally brushed my antenna wire across the little exposed leads that carry power to the check engine light, and the other lights on the message center control panel.

I believe I replaced fuse #16 to get everything working again.

If you have right and or left seat memory control then fuse 16 is good, if they do not work then fuse 16 is blown.

If the EATC module works, then fuse 17 is good, if it does not work then fuse 17 is blown......hope this helps a lil too.:D

I'm still not finding what went wrong in here. I checked the fuses and they both turned up fine. All the wires outside of the cluster from the stereo are untouched. Any other ideas?

I don't know what your problem is with your Mark, but your first problem is that you went to Best Buy. I am an installer/owner of a car audio shop and I wouldn't let anyone from there install on even a Caddy. There are good installers out there, just make sure that you go to a speciality shop. Would you let just anyone do the mods on your motor?

Not to sound Like a complete fool, but where is this number 16 fuse? Better yet where is the fuse box that contains that fuse? (i have 95 lsc) Thanks

I used to install years ago in the 90's. I try to keep up as much as possible just for my own knowledge. However there is a wiring kit from PAC that will let you plug into the factory JBL harness. So no cutting or splicing needed.

What I plan on doing when I install a double din touch screen Alpine into my Mark.

bought a harness, plugged directly into the jbl factory harness, no cutting or splicing. i soldered this to the new headunit leads and crimped over the solder joints.

works great. and you can solder the new harness to teh head on the bench, so no cramping or crowding, cut the wires to fit, don't jack out and be in a hurry.

this is exactly why I suggest using 100% new components and wiring. Dont reuse anything from the stock stereo system. Even run new power from the battery. Life is just less complicated.
