'04 LS8. I've already had the hard/indecisive shifting diagnosed as a shift solenoid pack issue but was told it wasn't urgent. Starting this morning I hear a tinny rattling between 2000 and 2300 RPMs in any gear or neutral. Because it happens in neutral it makes me think it's possibly exhaust-related, like a loose heat shield or chunked catalytic converter. But isn't that range right where converter lockup occurs?

I'm going to have the wife help me this evening so I can listen from under the car but in the meantime has anyone else had the same thing happen? Whatever it is I will update this thread with the diagnosis and resolution.

I think that you can eliminate the torque converter as a suspect. Lockup is electronically controlled and based on several variables including if the brake is on or off. It is not a simple RPM range control. It will not lockup in neutral or park.

That would be a huge relief. If it's a cat I can just replace both and do some "sound editing" I've been wanting to do but haven't had any reason to justify spending the money.

Wouldn't the torque converter be cheaper to replace than both cats? Well, OEM cats anyways...

No way I'm going with OEM. $100 + no labor vs w/e the TC costs + labor and might as well do the solenoid pack while they're in there. Looks like exhaust is cheaper for now even if I have to replace some clogged pipes.

I don't have the time to do transmission work which would including learning the witchcraft that autos run on. I'm more of a manual guy when it comes to mechanical experience.

It's not witchcraft lol. Just separate bellhousing from engine, there's the TC.

Well I couldn't recreate it in neutral with the car jacked up on one side but did hear a ticking that I've never heard before coming from inside the bell housing. :(
