just got that sony head unit that you can download your music onto the faceplate,now im looking for door speakers and rear deck speakers ,I dont really know that much about car audio ,i have a 12" infinity sub ,Well my question is will the head unit be good enough to run the 4 door speakers and what size speakers do you guys suggest, i know the stock size is 6x8 but can you put 6.5 or 5 1/4 in there. Also i have a 4 channel amp can i run the sub and the deck speakers off that and use the head unit to run all the door speakers.Sorry if i sound dumb but ive never really learned much about car audio.And i have the alpine system. thanks

the amp model number is 200ix and the head unit is mex-1gp ,havent decided on speakers yet but ill prob. go with infinity , ive always had those and have always been happy with them.. so i should go with 6x8's in the doors and 6x9's for the rear deck ,also i have a pair of infinity 3.5 could i put those in the center console? thanks

The rockford amps are pretty powerfull and they don't have a lot of distortion, you will want to either go with 6x8s (5x7s or 6.5s with adapter plates will work) forget about 5.25s any company that makes them will make better 6.5s.
What ever you get will have to handle some serious power, and ignore the max rating and go off the RMS rating. I personal have alpine type R's, kappa's are also nice. Rockford has some good 6.5s that come with adapter plates and play REAL loud. If your looking for something high end I would look into some focals, infinity perfects or MB Quarts

so should i run the door speakers off the head unit and use the amp to run the sub and the 6x9's or is it even worth putting 6x9's in the rear deck . sorry for al the questions im just trying to figure out what is best before i go buy all the stuff..

If you are planning on keeping the stock speakers in the doors then you would be ok to run them off of the deck, but if you are going to change them out for better ones then you would need to run them off an amp because you can actually starve the speaker and blow it out if you under power them. I agree with 1LoudLS's coices on speakers as well. I have a full alpine multimedia system that I am in the process of moving from one car to my LS, and with the exception of the alpine type-r sub all of my speakers are getting swapped from stock to mb quartz. I have been beating the crap out of them for six years and they still sound brand new.
Plus your best bet would be to get two amps and run one for just the sub, and a four channel for rest of the speakers.

In my opinion you already have speakers in all of the doors, do you really need them, probably not but it is all about what you want to put in your car. I am swapping out the front door speakers in my ls for 6.5 separates. I also have a center channel speaker for the dash, but I am running a dolby digital/dts theater system in mine. I can crank the bass if I get some little ricer :q:q:q:q pulling up next to me, but I am 35 years old. I like to listen to the music and be able to hear the lyrics with a little thump.
If you are just puttting the speakers in the center console for more speakers then I would say no, but like I said it is your car.

I have Infinity Kappas 6x8 in my doors and they sound amazing. I have them powered by an Alpine four channel amp. I use to have an an MB Quart 12" sub but sold it but thinking about getting another sub because I miss the bottom end in my music. If you are going to upgrade to better speakers then, yes get an four channel amp to run them. If not you will get a lot of distortion when you try to turn the volume up because your radio won't have enough power to be able to power them properly. As for the rear deck speakers, if you put a sub in the trunk I don't think it will matter because the 12" woofer will over take the little 6x9's. I mean I don't know how much difference they will make with have them hooked up also along with an sub.
yea thats probally what i will do i was thinking of getting a 5 channel amp to run everything.so the best option is just to replace the door speakers . and leave the rear deck speakers and the console speakers unhooked??

i say the best option(if you dont want to get another amp to run the door speakers) is to replace the front door and dont do any thing to the back speaker and just leave them disconnected (rear doors) since they are in a bad location, then i would take out the factory subs (since you have your own sub) and replace them with some good full range 6x9's and them run speaker wire back to them as the "new" rear speakers, you will get alot better sound from them instead of the "low in the door" factory rears
recap: my recomendation is, replace the front speakers with either 6.5s with adapter plates or 6x8s, i would also do componete speakers, un hook the rear door speakers, then put in good full range 6x9s in the factory sub location and run new speaker wire from the deck to them as the rears, then put your sub in the trunk, and then the most important part, JAM OUT

If you want more bass you would be better off with two amps. A five channel amp won't give you that much power to run a good sub, so you would end up needing a dedicated sub-amp.

Depends on how much you want to spend on a five channel amp and the rms power of the subs you plan on using. Use the rms ratings to match your amps to your speakers.

Those sound like good numbers for a five channel amp, but you have to look at the rms numbers for the speakers and sub that you want to use then compare those to the rms numbers on the amp per channel. The rms numbers are the constant power that the amp will put out all the time. If they aren't high enough for everything, then you will blow speakers by underpowering them. Infinity's are notorious for that, I once went through 8 pairs of Infinity 6 x 9's because my amp wasn't giving them enough power.

They have free install instructions and adapters for all your stuff you buy. Its a little more expensive, but for wwhat you get I think its worth it the first time. You find out what you really need, adapters, adapter plates, instructions, and whatever.
I've installed a few basic speaker replacement and sub installs myself after an install on my friends caprice. We had to do a lot of soldering for the head unit because it's an old unit, but other than that its remove a panel, unscrew, repeat.
