I need someone to walk me through this.

1993 Lincoln Mark VIII.
I want to install a new exhaust system on the car. I'd like to support LMS, but the show is about 1100 miles away.

So, hypothetically, let's say I take the Mark to my local custom exhaust shop. I don't have any experience with them, but I know of several in the area.

What do I want? Remove the 3rd cat? True dual? 2.5" diameter? Anything else? And importantly, what should I expect to pay?

havent done exhaust yet but a lot of people have been removing the 3rd cat and putting in a 2 in 2 out magnaflow muffler and straight pipes from there im gonna do no 3rd and no mufflers

Do I need to replace the missing 3rd cats with anything? Is this where most people put the X-pipe?

the x, double x, or the magnaflow

Oh- I see.

But if you run the magnaflow, does that eliminate the need to add two more mufflers in the back?

And how important is it to weld the components together?

What is the purpose of the x-pipes or y pipe or 2 into 1 or two muffler? Why is this not ommitted entirely and just run dual exhausts straight back into two mufflers?

My plan was the following-

omit the third cat on my 1993.
( where can I get an X pipe or Y pipe, and which is best for a 93 without custom headers?)
replace system with 2.5 inch exhaust
2 Dynomax Race Bullet mufflers

What should I expect a local shop to charge for the labor on this? I'll probably order the X pipe or Y pipe and Mufflers myself.

Or is it better to just get rid of the 3rd cat, replace it with this:
http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=436
and run straight 2.25 inch pipes out the back? Other than sound, what's the advantage in this?

My goal. Improved sound. Improved fuel effeciency. And, ideally, improved performance.

-also, other than sound, is there any benefit in just replacing the 2 mufflers with the bullet mufflers?

Pretty sure the "X" is for reversions, (where the exiting gas wants to stop and back up)
As far as I can tell the third cat isn't legaly enforceable, but a lot of shops still don't want to remove it, but the less restrictions the better.
I've been looking at LMS, and Geno, for a new system, I wanted headers as well, but everytime I get a couple grand saved up, something else needs fixing...

you don't have to go to LMS to get their exhaust installed - I ordered the two mufflers and double x pipe and had them installed at a local shop. And I am in Canada!

For the labour and the custom pipin, from the catback, it cost me $390 CAD.

You can still have our system.

We ship the critical components and you have them installed locally.

How do you like it? Any pics?

go with the 2 in 2 out Magnaflow. You will get a very nice sound. The muffler comes with an X pipe built in. You don't need the extra mufflers at the rear which will save you money.

You can use 2.5" pipes or 2.25" I'd go with the 2.5"....

If the muffler shop will not cut off the 3rd Cat then go with a 1 in 2 out Magnaflow. You will get very good sound. You should pick up some mpg gains.

there is a total of 3 cats on the cars. 2 are small and one main one. Cut out the 2 small ones and get a high flow main cat, then have a resonator put on and the mufflers removed. thats it. the exhaust will sound better than with mufflers. Guaranteed instead of mufflers i had these 4 inch tips in there place :D

i LOVE it - the car went into the paint shop almost immediately after installation, so I haven't had the chance to take pics yet or get back to you about that - sorry :( But I am picking it up from paint this afternoon with my digicam.

The sound is amazing, and I really notice a difference in power - even the paint shop guys noticed the difference.

The DOHC 4.6s can sound very snappy without an X-pipe, resonator, or some kind of appropriate junction int he center. I have heard DOHCs that snapped like a ricer's Honda because they ran a true dual exhaust. Yuck.

So, do these set ups look correct?

Does anyone have a sound clip of that 2.5" in/out system?

Here is MarkVIII93's sound clip, he has the magnaflow setup...

Damn. The file isn't working for me.

Here's a critical question-
what's the advantage/disadvatange of the one system over the other? Or, at the end of the day, do both setups essential offer the same increase it power and efficiency?

Does anyone have a sound clip of the Magnaflow dual in/out into straight pipes? I've searched all the Mark VIII boards I can think of but can't find a recording.

QUESTION:

Where should they cut the original system/begin the new 2.5 pipes?
I read somewhere 1.5" behind the 02 sensor. Today's estimates went a little better. They seemed more competent, but their prices were $225-300 just for pipes, assuming I had the muffler.
