Mechanic replaced right side catalytic converter to pass state inspection. Now occasionally (once a day) backfires under slight throttle. 6 cyl Could it be the catalytic converter? something else? Thanks (my 2nd Lincoln LS) first was black (too hot) this one is light tundra green nice color

Is it really backfiring? (combustion in the intake manifold)

Or, is it combustion in the exhaust?

Did you fix the reason that the converter failed in the first place? I bet not. I bet that you still have one or more marginal COPs (coils), and that is your problem. The misfires allow raw gas to hit the converter and ignite. If so, your new converter won't last long either.

Thanks

Sounds right ! Back firing in the exhaust. Mechanic never said anything about the coils and I did not think about them as it is not missing or running rough. No engine light on, maybe mechanic can figure out which coil

+1

fix why you needed new converters to begin with.
