New 5.0 in a Mark VIII

I posted this question on another forum also.

Ever since it came out I have wondered if it can be done.I mean the 5.0 is the same size as the 4.6 and I think the engine mounts are in the same location.The only problem I can see other than maybe the computer and wiring harness would be the intake entering from the front.

With the intake entering from the front I see the problem because of the low lip of the hood.It may not be that big of problem with the Gen 2's but I see it might be with the Gen 1's.Sure a Cobra hood would help that but to have it under the stock hood would be nice.

What do you guys think?

Hey you did bring it up.Wasn't sure if anyone did.The other way to do it also would be to wait about a year.By that time new GT's would be in the salvage yards.Also the new 5.0 is in F150's so there should be plenty around that time.;)
 
Wiring harness is no big deal. If I can make one practically from scratch, anyone can. And the Gen 1 has A LOT more clearance than it would appear up front. When I had my Mark and I had put in an Aviator engine from and 04. I used its stock crossover tube. Anyone who looked at it said the hood would not close. It did. The hood has a much bigger center point than it appears.

Yes it can fit, yes Ford sells the computer WITH harness for $2000. Yes it will take some fab work to make an intake tube.

Will prolly lose some functions of the car such as the fuel computer but everything else should work fine as long as you run both ECUs.
 
hmmm i live in detroit, there are a ton of those new mustangs gt riding around here and i know it will only be about another 6 months before i see those engine at the yards here, esp this one place called m-97. wondering how it will fit inside my gen 2 or a 2000-2008 crown vic. would be nice combos for those two cars.

I sure wish it could fit in anything.To do the swap like these with the 5.0 would be pretty bad ass.

I guess one way to know would be to take out the measuring tape.

I guess I should have used the search.Didn't think it was brought up let alone a few times.

Gonna have to whole heartedly disagree with that. I have had 8 RX-7s over the years. Had a 12A which is the 1.2L carbed version. It was OK. But then I got a GSL-SE and that was the old 2500lb car with the injected 13B and that thing was a hoot! Then the GTU which is the 944 looking kinda body but very very light. Got a turbo, GXL, GXL 2+2, 91 Cabriolet then a 93 Mica Yellow R-1. That R-1 had 422rwhp on a 1.3L tiny little motor.

Sure the rotary don't have any power below 3000 RPM and don't really build nice power till 6000RPM but man oh man! 6000-9000RPM is a freakin thrill ride! The rotary gave the RX a perfect balance and to this day is one of my favorite chassis. The second gens (86.5-91) were my favorite cause they were light and balanced.

And thats the whole thing, shove a 347ci V-8 under the hood and the car is no longer that nicely balanced machine. Sure its fast, you have to be a retard not to make a LS powered sub 3000 lb car fast, but the car is no longer the nimble balanced machine it once was.

Rotary motors got a bad rep in the beginning due to apex seals and they never lived it down. They are thirsty little buggers too wanting lots of fuel and oil injection. Thing is they are not the unreliable monsters some claim them to be. Yeah, you cant EVER overheat them and they cant have any detonation or the apex seals can get damaged but if its tuned right and maintenanced well then you don't have any issues.

If you do blow one up you can pull the motor without a lift, blow it apart (only has three moving parts), have the housings lapped, slap in 6 new apex seals and you are good to go! Easiest motor in the world to work on save for a VW and can by far make the most HP per CI. :)
