I have a 2003 Lincoln LS with the 3.9 V8. 106 k miles The transmission took a dump, and I found a rebuilt one with papers,
and just 5 k miles on it out of a 2004 LS V8 with a bad engine.
I checked with my local Lincoln dealer, gave him my VIN # , and I have the 5R55S transmission.
Yet some web sites limit my choices to only early production 2003 transmissions.
Does anyone have any incite to this dilemma?
The tranny used is only 500 so tempted to gamble, and its also a 2 hr + drive .
Thanks.

Unfortunately, the 2003 model year was a little different than the rest of the 2nd gen, so it is hard to say.

I’m gonna call my bud at Hillyers Ford parts dept in Woodburn Or USA , and give him my vin# and see what Carlos’s has to say about what tranny I need. Thanks

Be happy you got 106k out of that tranny. The 2003 (and early 2004) LS trannys had a known issue. There was a chemical additive that was left out of the transmission fluid... that caused premature failure of the transmission.

If possible... get the VIN number from the 2004 LS the donor tranny came out of. Then have your local dealer run an "Oasis Report".

The dealer should be able to determine when the tranny was made/installed... and if it had, or didn't need the additive.

Just wanted to finish and let you guys know that you can switch out the early 03, and late 03 with a 04 transmission through 06. A different wiring harness and solenoid is all that was needed. Easy Peezy
