i am in the process of rebuilding my rear differential and need some info, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated

(it is a 01 lincoln ls with the v8)

1. what is the torque on pinion nut/crush sleeve (actual correct rotational force, not just put it back where you got it)

2. torque on cap bolts for side carrier bearings

3. what should the backlash be set at

4. what is the torque on the top ball joint and alignment rod on the side of rear hub (i just pulled the bolt out of the top ball joint at the hub and then the one out of the side ball joint where the adjustable rod for rear alignment is bolted to hub while leaving the bolt in the bottom of the hub i just folded the hub down to pull the axle out of the defferential to remove it.)

5. what oil is recommended

6. any recommended places to purchase rebuild kit (bearings and seals for pinion, carrier, and axles.) might as well replace them all while i am in there.

oh, one other thing

also need torque for bolts that go through rubber to bolt driveshaft to rear end yoke.

Send a PM to Pektal* He has all the torque specs, or you can wait for him to see this and post in it.

What year ? v6? v8? All important to leading you in the right direction.:D

Ok looks like I'LL HAVE TO DO THIS MANUALLY!
.backlash at .254

runout at .25

Carrier bearing torque is 77Lbs

Pinion preload is 8-10 on used bearings, new is 16-28 in lbs

and the fluid should be 75w-140 full synthetic

As for the rest youre on your own driveshaft bolts should be tight not killem tight, and as far as the ball joint I dont know, just play it by ear. Does it not have a castle nut with a cotter key? I havent worked on too many ls's. ANd good luck to you

If I gave you that info I think Alldata may send men in black suits here to kill me.LOL. Usually I can copy and paste stuff this time it didnt let me.

hehe... I was hoping you'd give up the login info :D

Oh well. I don't have my shop manuals with me, but tha backlash seems like a LOT of play doesn't it? I would think .008-.012 would be ideal.

Also to the OP, you should install an LSD while you're in there. I did it this spring, and love the results. I used the carrier from an 05 Mustang GT. any 8.8" 28 spline should work. Just reuse your stock ring gear and pinion.

FYI, the 8.8" shim kit will work in the 8.0" pumpkin.

:slam Sorry good thing you said something, thats in MM in inches its .010 sorry and also .010 runout ance again sorry

little confused

what exactly are you referring to by runout just to make sure.

i might be confused

Pinion assembly runout how much wiggle it has rotationally.

isn't that the same thing as backlash (how much wiggle it has between the ring and pinion and only has to be checked on the ring gear and not both the ring gear and pinion gear)

pretty much it was just on the list I asked myself the same what is that and had to look it up.

any more info

Thanks for the info so far. Does anyone else have the other torque values i need for the hub area and driveshaft bolts. Thanks.

just sent you a pm. Sorry I didn't last night, I was changing a front lower ball joint and tie rod end. The ball joint was a beotch to press in.

thanks a bunch

Pektel,

I got the info, and again thanks. Will be putting this thing back together as soon as the parts get here.
