I have a base '95 MK8; I don't foresee me doing a true dual, as it will likely be too costly for a custom system. So I was thinking of this:

**Replace third cat with Magnaflow Y-pipe (~$25)
**Replace middle resonator with Dynomax Bullet muffler (~$40)
**Replace rear mufflers with straight pipe and tips ($??)

I'm figuring the Y should be 2.25" dual inlet, 2.5" single outlet; then the Bullet muffler should be 2.5" on both sides, and the straight pipe should be 2.25"

Does this sound doable? Are my dimensions accurate? I think i can probably get this all done for easily under $200 total spent.

thanks,
JC

IMO, it will work fine, but it pretty much won't do a thing for power.. Just hack the mufflers off and leave the rest, or do a full exhaust system.

Not really looking for a power upgrade...just want it to sound like a V8 should...I got my SS for going fast :D

Should work and sound pretty good. Post up a youtube vid when it's done so we can hear it. You might gain like 5-10 hp from removing the useless mid cat/mufflers(includes effective power gained by weight reduction). Just don't expect to really feel a difference.

I think you will be much happier just cutting the mufflers off. I drove my first mark for years like that, never had any issues and sounded amazing.

Here are my experiences on this issue.
On my car I started by cutting the mufflers off which made it nice and loud, but it wasn't loud in a good way and it would drone me to death at certain rpm ranges. LOTS of drone.

Next I went and had a shop put on two magnaflows and it made the car way too quite. Aside from a slight rumble you could hardly tell it was different than stock. Unhappy with the sound I decided to try cutting off the third cat. Doing so definitely made things more lively while allowing me to keep the magnaflows to reduce drone.

In the end I gave the car a whole exhaust setup with headers/high flow cats/full 2.5 catback etc. Very nice sound :0 That costs a ton though and I wouldn't recommend it unless you really care about performance.

Good post.
Cut muffs=drone IMHO
It is livable but can be annoying.

You get what you pay for.

For the price of nothing just cut the mufflers, I did this in my first mark and drove like that for years. It did drone but I lived with the minor inconvenience and liked the sound.

IMHO, cut muffler, Save $ for the full exhaust set up.

I got my muffs cut off and 3rd cat and the resonator removed ive been told my countless people that it sounds like a ferrari or lambo or the infiniti g37s its not to loud but sounds sooo sexy

Simply cutting off the mufflers does make for a bit of drone. Replacing the mufflers with tailpipes that exit past the bumper or putting turn-downs in their place helps with the issue.

I cut of mine off fall of 09 and have yet to figure out what i'm putting in there place. I like it but needs to be a little bit more "controled". Perhaps the above posters comment of just finishing w/ pipe and tips helps said issue instead of the pipes ending under the car. Other then that i like mine. I've also considered getting a pair of these.

If I go that route i'm hopeing it will still have good tone but a tit hair mellower. Just get a sawzall(?) and chop them off. If its to much you can always put the stocks back on.

I am looking to do somthing like this on my 97 but living in Pa I don't think it pass emmisions test. I think the way I am going is to take the third cat out and use a set of super 40's or the new Cherry Bomb mufflers NOT Glass Packs. My buddy has them on his Mustang and they sound great.

Also you gotta watch out for cops with no mufflers. If they pull you over and see that you don't have any form of a muffler they might be a bit annoyed. They tend to be more lenient if you at least have a full working exhaust with cats/mufflers.

My old 97 Tbird had 3rd cat deleted and I installed dual 2.5" to 3" single with a single magnaflow muffler back out to another y with some nice turn downs that tucked almost stock there is a video of it on YouTube but I'm to lazy to look link up but sounded great

I have on my 94 the 3rd cat deleted a 2 in 2 out muffler at the resonator with no mufflers to follow.

Nice subtle tone not real loud but a nice growl when you get on it and at idle is sounds great ...

Got pulled over the other day with it .... Barney told me my exhaust was loud ... I said it's not as loud as most truck and Harley's in this area. He ask me if I had modified my exhaust. I said the car is 17 years old so yes I had to replace my exhaust. He said Oh ... So have you been drinking?

I do believe this is what he was looking for ... an excuse to just look for a DWI. But I hadn't been drinking ..... so he just left me ....

Oh by the way ... a second squad had to pull up in the mean time .... You know you have to watch out for those Lincoln drivers ...

When you say "no mufflers to follow", do you mean you ended it right there after the mid-mount muffler with turndowns, or did you run straight pipe out the back?

Ive really been considering removing my mufflers as well. Im not sure what people mean by drone anyone have any clips of this said drone? also where does everyone cut the rear mufflers at and do you just leave em there. i like the idea of putting turn downs on them. im pretty sure cheap-o bolt on ones from advance or vatozone would work right. To be honest with ya im really not worried about drone to much with all the sound deadening ive done to the trunk and the levels at which i play my stereo?

sorry for the thread jacking :)
