I am going to pickup a Pioneer nav system for my LS but had some questions. What is the main differences between the AVIC series? They prices seem to be all over the place. My other question is I keep seeing them "bypass" devices on ebay for them. What is this for? Any help would be appreciated.

The avic z2 is the replacement for the avic z1. there is also the n something and new d3 which is a step down from the z2 (does everything). the bypass allows you to watch a dvd or change your navigation while you are moving. check out avic411.com they talk about the bypasses and most of them are free to do either by you or your installer.

Do NOT pay for any bypass "device" on ebay.

www.avic411.com will tell you how to do the bypass easily, and for free.

For the Avic d3, you ground the parking brake wire, and move one other wire located within the Avic's plug. This allows full navigation/full dvd functionality with the car in motion.

I dont know ALL of the differences. But the Z series has dual slots. You can have full navigation function while a CD or DVD is loaded in a second slot.

The Avic D3 has one slot, and can store a route in memory while you have a music CD or DVD in the slot..but it doesnt provide FULL navigation options while that slot is occupied with anything other than the NAV DVD.

I just put the D3 in my car last week and its great, I dont rely on the NAV too much, but more for the IPOD and DVD movie functionality. The bypasses sold on Ebay are a scam, they send you intructions on how to do it which can be found on avic411.com like lseguy said. The bypass works great and I have been watching DVD's in Chicago traffic everyday on my way to work and all of the sudden my road rage went away, haha.

So you cannot listen to a CD and have the nav function at the same time with the D3? Wow, that seems sorta lame. I guess I will hold off as the Z's are outta the budget.

z series= double din, with hard drive
d series= double din, the d2 and d1 didnt have a cd slot if i remember correctly
n series= single din, flip out screen, single cd slot.(what i have)

def go for it....you cant go wrong with any of these imho.

Not entirely correct.

You can pre-program a route into the D3. As long as the Navi DVD is in the slot, it will store the complete route info, including alternate routes, into memory.

After your route is progammed and saved, you can then remove the Navi DVD, and insert your music CD into the slot, and have both the navi function and CD music at the same time.

If you need to program another route, you will need to re-insert the navi DVD first.

For me, this will be mostly a non issue, as I rarely listen to CD's today on my stock head unit. I have my mp3 player with thousands of songs, and it's connected via an Aux adapter. So 90% of the time, I'll have the Navi DVD inserted, and music via MP3 player.

I do wonder, however, if I can program a route via the Navi DVD, remove the DVD, insert a Movie DVD, and have the Movie playing on my rear monitors while the D3's screen displays the navigation screen.

I listen to a lot of CD's so I think I need the dual drive version. Anyone have an opinion on the Eclipse units?

Since I've owned every Avic Letter, here it goes.

Avic N1 = Original Flip out - One CD/DVD Drive
Avic N2 = Upgrade to N1 - Basically a Software upgrade
Avic N3 = You guessed it. Upgrade to N2

Avic D1 = Original Double DIN - One CD Drive and one DVD Drive - No DVD Decoding hardware built in.

Avic D2 = Must I say it? Ok, Ok. Upgrade to D1 - I hear it can do bluetooth with the correct adapter. Never tried it, don't have a D2.

Avic D3 = Upgrade and stepdown from D2. Upgrade = Faster UI, all buttons on the left side. One CD/DVD Drive. I put one in my 98 to replace the D1 I had in there. D3 = Sucky sucky unless you're into watching DVD's while driving. It supports bluetooth through adapter. It can change button backlighting colors though! yawn....

Avic Z1 = Best Pioneer has to offer. Built-in Hard Disk (30 gig, I believe), one CD/DVD drive, bluetooth, color matching???

Avic Z2 = Upgrade to Z1.

All units can do XM and Sirius as well as XM NavTraffic. I hear the Z series have a much more improved Sirius interface over the other Avic Series.

yes i have the eclipse 6600 and it is a beast. it has dual slots one for nav and one for cd/dvd/etc. with the eclipse ipod module. the nav is on point. it has 5v preouts to. i had the shop ground my parking brake wire so i could watch dvd while driving. i didnt know the nav was that accurate but it is.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I ended up buying a Kenwood unit. I looked at the Pioneer's and Eclipse but went with the Kenwood. I have always been a Pioneer guy, but the idea of swapping discs just seems like a stupid move on their part. I will post pics once I get it installed etc.

question. i was interested in a navi unti but my 6disc in the dash, will that not work anymore...?

ohhh ok. but i love my 6 disc chnager :)

hrm. i really want a navi but i dont know if i want to sacrifice my 6disc

You can buy a 6 and even a 12 disk changer for almost any aftermarket Navigation unit. why you'd want to do that when you can put 10 hours of music on one MP3 CD i don't understand. Hell, (I'm sure the audio experts will correct me on this), I think you can even get CD/DVD changers that will play CD's loaded with MP3's.

The Avic Z1 has around 10 gigs worth of storage for music. Do you have about 7 days worth of non stop non repeating MP3's?

I dont even use CD's 90% of the time. My entire music collection is ripped to Mp3's. Ipod will go in the glovebox with 10Gigs of music. Avic D3 will completely control and charge the Ipod. No CD or changer necessary.

It's 2007.

Which part of D1 D2 Z1 and Z2 descriptions did you not understand? You dont swap the NAVigation DVD with audio CD's on those units.

I understood totally. I looked for a D1, D2 and found nothing that was new in the box. Add to that the D1 D2 won't play DVD's. I already stated the Z series was outta my budget, which leaves the D3, which you have to swap disks. Understand?

Well unfortunately I am not in the USA. No dealers around me had one. If I order it off ebay, by the time I pay the over priced shipping rates, pay duty and the taxes it would be close to the price of a Z1.
If the Kenwood sucks, it can always be taken out an sold later when the price of Z1's have dropped.

which kenwood did you go with? I just recently saw their new model the dnx 7100 and it seems pretty sharp. From what I can tell the only thing it doesnt have that the avic z1/z2 has is the hard drive. the kenwood runs the navigations off of flash memory so it is supposed to be much faster and better because it is the garmin navigation. it also has a usb high speed connection for the ipod (or other mps player). significantly cheaper than the avics as well. i am planning on putting one of these in mine soon and my wifes expedition

I bought a DDX6019 / Garmin 510 combo. I will let you know how well it works next week after installing it.
