Does installing an aftermarket torque converter improve fuel economy ? My existing stock converter is a mess and might die soon.

P.S I have a 05 automatic V8 Mustang.

You may be in the wrong forum.
If your torque converter has a defect (particularly if it can't lock), then fixing or replacing it will improve fuel economy. Going stock or aftermarket makes no difference there.

If you want to improve fuel economy, then fix everything that is wrong, and drive very conservatively. Of course, if you wanted to drive conservatively, you probably wouldn't have picked that car.

What are the symptoms of your failing torque converter?
