Hi guys, here is another problem.

I have a 2002 Lincoln LS V6 automatic. 3.0 L

Since a week ago I have noticed that when Turn the engine on and I put the car on reverse It shufs off. So far Its only on reverse. This happen very often.

If you skip reverse and go straight to drive it stays running? If it does does the engine seem to skip or hiccup in anyway when you pass reverse?

Yes, when I skip reverse and go straight ti drive it stays running!! But i feel like a jump in the car. You know what i mean?

The jump is always that i put on Drive. But the it shufs off on reverse frecuently.

I hope you can help me with this issue. Im planning to take the car to a transmission shop. But i would like to idea of what is wrong first.

does it shut off as quick as if your turning the key off, or does it sputter a little and then die?

If you start if in neutral then go to reverse does it do the same thing? I'm trying to figure out if it's a problem in the transmission mechanically or if it's an electrical issue. If you have a video phone or camera and can post a video of the car dieing in action that would be helpful.

My wild guess is that it's too problems combined.
1. Failing IAC.
2. Failing solenoid in transmission.

A slow or bad IAC would let the engine stall when a sudden load is placed on it.

A bad solenoid in the transmission can make reverse engagement very harsh.

Since it's the V6, I'd also check for a vacuum leak at the PCV valve.

Of course, it could be something else...

I just tried putting on Neutral first, then reverse and I didn't shuts off. Anyway, as soon as I get home I will try again. Because I did it only one time so I need to make sure.

If you leave it in Neutral make sure you set the parking brake.

Ok, guys here are the results of my latest testing.

I turned the engine on, I put it on Neutral, then on Reverse and it tried to die but I didnt. So i did it one more time, exactly the same.

After that, I turned the engine on again, put it directly on Reverse It keeps shuting off.

What do you guys recommend, I do really love this car, its very clean an it run smooth, i wanna try to fix it before doing anything else.

If it is something about IAC, solenoids, vacuum leak, where are they located in 2002 linconl ls v6 automatic. Are they easy to replace or it has to be on a dealer?

There is any way that i can fix this myself?
I dont want to pay $600, $700, $800 or even more to the dealerships.

Thank all of you guys for helping me with my frustration. You are awesome!!!

It sounds like the torque converter could be locked up in reverse. Will the car stay running in reverse if it is moving, but die when you stop?

The car stay running in reverse. So far, once the car is running wether R or D it doesnt shut off, even if i stop.
By the way, today the car did the same but this time when i put it in Drive. So it looks like this is getting worse. I dont understand!

Tomorrow i will try to record a short video

Check your fluid level.

Where do I check the fluid level. Sorry guys, i know im asking to much, but the things is that Its my first time with Ford's car.

So far I have several answers, from here and others. I dont know yet whre the problem is, so im thinking about changing all the parts possible:

1 - IAC
2- PCV Valve
3- Solenoids.

These were I have received a most as a possible problem.

The IAC is bolted to the throttle body, and is easy to change. You could also try cleaning it.

Replacement of the PCV valve and associated plumbing requires the removal of the top half of the intake manifold. There are some posts on this.

The solenoids in question are inside the transmission. You have to drain it and drop the pan to get to them.

I think that you may find that you will save money by going to a Lincoln dealer and paying the $100 to $200 (depends on area you are in) diagnostic fee to find out exactly what is wrong before replacing parts that may not be bad. If the solenoid assembly in the transmission is bad, you may want to get the dealer to do that. The transmission is a pain to correctly refill without the right tools.

A video will help us. Without it I have more questions, one is what RPM does your car idle at and when you start it cold what RPMS does it idle at.

It's probably not the PCV valve, but there is a 90 degree elbo that connects to the PCV valve that could be cracked that is fairly common in these cars. While you're in there you might as well change the PCV valve anyway as it's right there.

I took a few pictures when I did mine. Turns out mine wasn't cracked but would have soon.

Today i took my car to the dealer, and they said that they charge me $105 for regular scan, sometimes the problems doesnt appers. So i suppose I have to spend this money on my own risk. Damm!! In the meantime my car is getting worse, now when i Put it on Drive It tries to die.

Guys, tomorrow i will record a short video, if there is something that you want me to record. Let me know!!!

I wanna fix this already...I have never open an engine, so what do you recomend me? Should i do it myself or not?

thx

Again, do the easiest/cheapest/simplest thing first. Have the transmission fluid level checked. Low/worn out fluid will cause the car to stall. If the level is correct and in good shape, go from there.

yaselpolo.............what was the verdict, mine is also starting to do this in reverse???

You should check your charging system then.

UPDATED: My car keep shutting of when reverse, but not so often as when I opened this thread. Now my problems is Overheating. Any advice?

Thank you guys for all your responses!

for the overheating, you probably have a/many leaks in the cooling system like 91% of all LSes

have you thought about taking it in to get diagnosed by someone who can actually look at the car and test things? usually when you cant find the problem your self, that $100 is worth the price of admission.
