Multimeter method?

You can do a continuity check across the contact pins but that's very basic. I'd suppose that there's something more but I don't know what it is. Somebody else chime in!!!

You're checking resistance (ohms) coils are usually 15 to 18 normally on GM's you touch both posts on each of the coilpacks,2 per coilpack. I'm not familiar with the LS setup. One of these will be way higher indicating that it's bad.
 
Most LS coil faults tend to be high voltage dielectric breakdown problems. A resistance test won't catch that. The best way to test in actual operation (not in the car). The dealers (at least some) have equipment to do this.

+1 the ignition coil assemblies are tested under stress.
