I've read a lot of threads where everyon has shown off their exhausts. Some have mufflers, and some have straight through pipes. Which is the best way to go? How much louder would it be without mufflers?

On a stock pipe setup the mufflerless isnt too loud.
There's no measure of "loud" "loud enough" or "too loud."
I replaced everything from the Cats back with just 2.5" pipe and a Dynaflow UltraFlo-X. It sounds great outside the car. Inside the car, when I'm alone, it sounds great. When I have people in the car, I wish it were a little more quiet.
I think if I do anything else to the exhaust, I'm going to install those electric dump pipes like Driller did.

I have heard both with and without muffs and have to decided to go with the LMS muffs or something like them when the time comes.

Cut the mufflers out and have 3 inch chrome 45 cut outs out the back, all it cost me was 40 for tips and I cant b more happy with how it sounds, I get complements all the time, sounds really good when u give it a little gas and get off right into 3rd it has a excellent scavenging sound, only cons I have is at first the drone will kill u under slow accel. at around 0-25 from there on its great, way to get around this drone is to just give it some gas, I also got better gas mileage since cutting them out it took about a month for me to really notice about 1-2 mpg better on average also the car takes a little while to set the sound It kinda sounds wierd but over a little time the car sounds better, idk maybe it blast out the cats or something idk, other ppl have noticed this with my car

ive heard some people claim that straight pipes hurt low end torque... any truth to this? i had an oldsmobile aurora with a 32valve northstar and it seemed fine without mufflers, but at the same time my buddy had a late model SHO taurus with a v8 and claimed his car was much slower without mufflers... just wondering if there is any truth to this

Sure, otherwise everybody would be running 5" pipes right.
You need your exhaust 'sized' to the motors potential. No restriction is bad for exhaust scavenging and will hurt torque if oversized. (IMHO, of course)

All I know is when I was a kid I despised that nasty horrible sound that came fom glasspacks, awful raspy crappy sound.

What about our mark viii's? Ive got a 98lsc with just maf, sct xcal2 and colder plugs and im goin to the drag strip in spring... do you think hacking off the mufflers would hurt on this setup?? right now im running flowmasters on it and it doesnt seem to make much of a difference in sound/performance.

Yeah, a car with straight pipes all the way back without any cats will sound nasty with glass packs (unless you like that raspy sound)
If you just remove the rear mufflers and go with straight pipes/tips in their place it sounds awesome! Not raspy at all. You will have some low end interior drone but you will get used to it after a while! I get compliments on the way my exhaust sounds quite often. Kinda sounds like a cobra's exhaust with performance mufflers.

:iconcur: The drone at lower rpms gets a little annoying sometimes, but overall I like the sound of the car much better. Besides, my stereo's usually loud enough so I don't hear it much anyways, except at WOT
I own a 98 lsc, On the stock pipes I cut out the rear mufflers and added a x pipe muffler from magnaflow with a second x pipe directly behind the cats, Sounds very exotic and deep , Its pretty quiet when cruising but when you open it up it can turn alot of heads.
