Morning peeps: part question v. rear retaining nut

Doing the rear hubs today and the rear retaining nut Ford wants 10$ a piece and it's all the way across town.

Was wondering if any of you guys have used 'replacement nuts'? Or if you bought the stock ones.

For document's sake.

Orielly does carry this though usually it's an order part. ( there is only 1 in houston for me ).

Of course so does the ford dealership but the price for the retaining nut is the same at orielly as it is at the ford dealership. 9$

They ARE a one time use only..they have a teflon ring

Teflon is only good to be torqued once!

Same rule applies for any Teflon application, IE power steering hoses,ect ect
 
I don't remember any Teflon on mine. My factory units were a multi-piece nut sandwiched in a shell to make one unit.

And for what it's worth.....


I've performed 3 hubswaps using the original nuts with no problems.

Similar experiences, i have had the rear axle nuts off several times on several marks, tbirds, cougars always reused...never had a issue always retorqued to spec

dude seriously it is $20,I piss away $20 more times in a day then i can count. it is holding on a vital part that sees a lot of torque and heat. why not spend the $20
 
It's a steel nut on a steel shaft, there are no dissimilar metal issues, nor any over torquing procedures that damage it either.

If you can show me the stats on how that nut is stressed beyond it's operational limit, I'll consider changing the way I do things. Till then I'll continue to do things my way, which has worked out well for the last 10 years.

As to your concerns of me being a tight wad.....

Maybe, but I have much bigger and more expensive toys to pay for. 20 dollars is 20 dollars.

Book doesn't show rear spec, computer says it's 251Ft Lbs
 
I have reused them before many times as well, but one time a few years ago a properly torqued one backed off on my race car. I was glad I was just driving down the street checking for boost leaks and not on an all out pass at the strip. Since then I have always bought new ones...just food for thought.
