'They are defecating on our doorsteps': Manhattan residents' fury over Occupy Wall St protesters

Furious Manhattan residents have accused the ever-growing contingent of Occupy Wall Street protesters of 'defecating on our doorsteps' and expressed fears for the safety of their children.

Homeowners living near Zuccotti Park, where several hundred anti-capitalist campaigners are now camped, turned out in force for a Community Board 1 meeting last night.

They claim they have been subjected to insults and harassment as they head to work each morning and blasted politicians for allowing the siege to continue.
What a mess: Some of the more conscientious Occupy Wall St protesters clean up after themselves in Zuccotti Park. Others, according to residents, don't

'They are defecating on our doorsteps,' fumed Catherine Hughes, a member of Community Board 1 and a stay-at-home mother who lives one block from the chaos.

'A lot of people are very frustrated. A lot of people are concerned about the safety of our kids.'

Board member Paul Cantor said residents are fed up with the incessant racket coming from the protest at all hours.

'If people can't sleep and children can't sleep because the protesters are banging drums, then that's a problem.'

According to the New York Post, the line to get into the Board's offices spilled onto the street as several hundred people turned up to voice their concerns.

Those outside ended up in a slanging match with Zuccotti sympathisers.

The Community Board passed a resolution saying they supported the right to protest in the park, wanted more limits on the noise and more bathroom facilities, it was reported on My Fox New York.

The resolution, however, isn't binding or enforceable.

At times, the Occupy Wall Street protest has attracted thousands, prompting angry reaction from businesses who claim the movement is costing them money.

Stacey Tzortzatos, manager of restaurant Panini & Co., said the biggest problem was protesters coming in to use the bathroom.

She said she put locks on the bathroom doors in response.

'They take showers using the sink, they brush their teeth, and they make a huge mess.
