I have a moaning noise when I turn the wheels to the right only. Sounds like the P/S fluid is low but I checked it and its topped off.

Any ideas?

Is the moaning only while the car is moving, or do you also get it when the car is still?
Are you holding the steering wheel against the lock? (Can you turn it any more to the right?)
Does it stop if you let go of the steering wheel?

Both
No, I can continue to turn it.

You might start by draining out all of the fluid and replacing it with fresh (use Mercon V, no power steering fluid). Be sure to check and clean the screen at the bottom of the reservoir.

It can be a pain to get all the air out of the power steering after this without the use of a vacuum pump.

If that doesn't resolve it, I would suspect an issue with the rack since it's only doing it in one direction.

Isn't it just standard Mercon (III not V) for PS?

They updated the spec to say that the synthetic Mercon is now preferred for the power steering, but yes the original owner's manual called out the non-synthetic. This is in a TSB, but I forget which one.

I always thought power steering fluid and transmission fluid were interchangeable anyways.

replacing fluid

jack up front of vehicle tires off the ground. replace fluid, turn steering wheel slowly left to end the back right to end, keep this up until air is out of system.
of course the engine is running while you're turning the wheel.

I'm sure Joegr will speakup if this won't do it on the LS. I used this method on my BMW's and it worked fine.

Check for any leakage around the seals on the rack.

Motorcraft makes a fluid that you can pour in and it should solve the moaning problem mine started doing that about a year ago and hasn't since i put some of the fluid in. I cant for the life of me remember what the name of it was. I'll have to see if i can find the bottle of it.

Ok I couldnt find the exact bottle I must have thrown it away but I did some research and I think its this bad boy right here the bottles look the same Motorcraft XL3. Under 10 bucks at the ford/lincoln dealership. I swear I found this fix off this site I just don't feel like searching for where I found it.
