ok, i took the rear tire off recently and noticed the metal shaft(halfshaft?) that protrudes through the center of the hub/rotor is completely rusted..No sign of threads. ITS BAD..

So i'm sitting here bored and was wondering if my bearings go bad will i need to get used non rusted shafts so i can replace the bearings.If so what kind of work does replacing the shaft require?
 
The shaft you're seeing is the end of the Axle!! I suggest you not mess with anything back there if someone has to tell you that.. No hard feelings
 
lol...For stuff like this i'd have my mech friend do it depending on how hard it is.. Just curious. I was just looking for some info buddy..

I'm not the smartest but i've been able to do all my repairs thus far..I don't know dick about halfshafts n whatnots.
 
If the axle threads are rusted off then you will need new axles and hubs. It happens from time to time.
I have a pair of Texas (no rust) axles and hubs I could sell you but shipping will be around $100 due to weight and size.
 
yes it is a half-shaft and it is an easy job to replace.
The bearing needs to be pressed out and in also easy if you
have a nice 10 ton press.
 
I can't immagine why you couldn't see the hub nut threads on the axle, take some pics. You don't have to replace the axle when you swap in new hubs / unless the hubs have a different spline count, which they shouldn't. Axles will normally outlast the CV boots, when your boots bust open and sling grease everywhere, replace the axle

I believe he is saying his are completly rusted out. Someone else on here just had that problem where the nut and axle threads were rusted off and there was also rust dammage to the hub. The Mark tends to have rust issues there in bad climates.
 
that is "normal" up here above the rust belt. that nut is stock. and the solution usually is zip it off with an impact, the threads are there just filled with rust. but it wouldn't hurt to have spare shafts around if this is your only mode of transportation

Thats good to hear i guess..My friend said he could get them off w/ his impact but i was skeptical seeing as how theres no threads showing. I'll prob get a spare before i let him loosen them incase something happens..thanks chicken.
 
If you can get a socket on the hex you may be able to get the nut off. I just delt with this same scenario. Mine were WAY worse. There are other ways ot get it off. Try to do it without destroying the hub. Unless you are planning a mustang hub swap. You will have ot replace the half shfts.....most likely.

Don't worry about not seeing threds. There are threads where the nut is. It will just twist as long as you can get the socket on. The nut may disintegrate. Then you can just grind at with a die grinder.
 
Make sure to soak it in PB Blast the night before.
 
My wheel bearings and everything are fine. This is just a prevenative thread to see wtf i could/should do if/when the time comes. I would def soak her for awhile.
 
I am going to buy a pair of shafts for the same reason. Just have them here for if and when I go in there. At some point I am going to do wheel bearings at the very least and I would not want to be stuck with nothing there. I know mine were bad before I put it away for the winter but I really did not look at them too close.
 
mine were rusted that bad and when I took it in to get a new diffy the mechanic said the nuts came right off with and impact wrench. Then again the only threads that were remaining were under the nut and rest had rusted off
