Coming home tonight I encountered an older, just a guess early 90s 2-door convertible Benz. Really nice looking one, I believe it was a 500 SEL, but I'm hardly a Benz fanatic. I'm not really impressed with the Mercedes Benz in general, but the 2-door sporty ones are definately very nice, AMG models, and some of the new ones are incredible. Anyhow, not much of a street racer these days but not one to let some nimrod gutter run me. I noticed this thing tooling along just because of its very nice looks, he was behind a few cars, and I wasn't even paying it much attention. I get up to a red light, I'm stopped, and this Ron Jeramy looking wanna be goes from the left lane after he was already stopped, across the right lane and into the gutter lane and sits in my blind spot. I thought he was going to make a right turn when he started the move he made but no. I think he was going to try to blast me. Keep in mind he was a few cars back so I don't think he really could see possibly what was at the light, but I seen him coming, it was bright red, his Benz that is. So I get ready to launch, no brake rev, just aware of the light and his position. He had 150' at most to get me before a parked car was in his path. He didn't have a chance IMO, thats not alot of room to get ahead of someone if there car isn't alot slower than yours. Light turned green, I pulled away with quick reaction but light throttle, he just pulled in right behind me. Didn't even try. Now in moderate traffic you don't pull into the gutter lane unless you intend to skip ahead of everyone, right? Not exactly an exciting race story, but I think he didn't want to get embarrassed.


Maybe a little respect for the LSE? I think so.
 
I have driven a 98 500SL (one of my boss's cars)
and I own a '01 LS V8

500SL > LS V8
Hands down, no questions asked. It's not even close.

I SAID EARLY 90s AND I WAS GUESSING THE AGE. They're alot slower.

Also a car has to be alot faster to get ahead of another car in that short of distance.

I DIDN'T SAY MY CAR WAS FASTER AND DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW FAST THAT BENZ IS.

Even if a car is a whole second faster 0-60, 100-150' isn't enough time to get ahead of someone in that short a distance.
 
Actually the early 90s 500SL had more power than the 96 and up SL500. So did the 600SL.

I have driven a 96 S500 2 door and it was plenty fast. The same body CL600 is a monster.

Was it the 2 seater convertible Benz? If it was early 90s convertible 4 seater, it could have been the E320 W124 body which came only with a 6 cylinder engine.

Also, the Benzes of early 90s and most of 80s start in second gear then they drop a gear after being are floored.

Yep a contertable 2 seater type.

It wasn't a matter of if I could beat him, he didn't even try for some reason. He went out of his way to get in the gutter lane, but then left me alone.

Maybe he didn't want to crap his depends, or maybe he was drunk, who knows, but it sure seemed like he was going try to race me and then didn't.

Maybe he just wanted to get a good look at my car.

Then why the point of this thread??? Why in the world would he try if there was no way in the world he had room without causing an accident??? Would you have tried and risked an accident? You claim respect and fear of the LS by the Benz owner when in fact there was nothing he could do. That's the same thing as me saying I dusted a 1000 hp Supra with my Cobra when in fact he couldn't go because there was a car in front of him. You see my point?

If he had pulled up next to a 81 Escort he probably would have just shot right in front of him, when he saw it was a LS he decided to not bother. That was the point.

This isn't a "I whooped a car thats way out of my league thread" and the responses were coming off that way.

Comparing the situation to 400hp and 1000hp cars is hardly the same as this.

let me get this straight.. b/c the driver did not race that means he respects the LSE? so when i refuse to race a civic in midday traffic that means i respect the civic?

I think some of you need to re-read his posts a little bit as it seems that most of you are taking them out of context.

LuxurySport00 his point wasnt even comparable to your example given. It wasn't that the other guy refused to race right from the start, it was that the other guy got all lined up like he was intending to race and then decided not to. If you did that to a Civic and then at the last moment chickened out then it was probably because you had time to rethink the possibilities and become a little hesitant of your competition. In this case it was probably both the competition not being too slow, but not neccessarily winning a normal race, and also the proximity of the parked cars ahead.

Early 90's MB to a 2000 LSE? Yeah, I think the LSE would win in a category or two. While maybe not quicker there are other things that count also. Have you owned a Benz, because I have and while they are nice they aren't as untouchable as a lot make them out to be.
 
Well... it really isn't much to brag about how much better your car is when the one you're comparing it to is a decade older.

I agree, this thread just got way out of line. Forums are for opinions, but it seems to be that most of the time members here are either bashing, making fun, or just flat out acting like a bitch to other members on this forum.

Like Rocket said, the Benz guy pulled up and wanted to race, but thought about it...after all, he does have a V8. What this means is that the guy in the benz probably didn't want to race because there are possibilities of us having an extra somethign under the hood. Don't get me wrong, the SL has a V8 also, but Benz's engines are also more restricted that the Lincoln, and that means the possibility of comming by aftermarket stuff is slimmer.

And like 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC said, maybe he was just looking at his car...Well I happen to like his car alot. I think it looks pretty damn fine, and if I had a car that was 15 years older and saw that cruising down the road, I would not hesitate to speed up and look at it.

02LSE96LSC91SE84TC I love that phantom car, it looks sweet as hell and I'd probably do the same as the guy in the benz if I didnt know what the 3.9 V8 could do.
 
OMG read my original post, I actually compliment the MB, at no point did I say it wasn't a nice car. ^^^READ IT.

The MB wins in every level. For the sixth time its not a comparison thread. At no point did I say my car was faster or better. ^^^READ.

If I would have labeled the thread "Older dude in late model 2-seater luxury sport type of convertable car, that will remain un-named, goes out of his way to get next to me then doen't even race". Would that have been better.

Or "idiot driver crosses 2 lanes to get next to me and then doesn't bother to race".

It looks like it was a SL500. The early to late 90s all look similar and have a 5.0 V-8 with 315hp from what I can tell. 0-60s are low to mid 6s and 1/4s are mid to high 14s from what I've seen. I'm assuming the convertable is the slower of the times. Ohh slower than I expected, let me clarify for those who easily misunderstand me. SLOWER THAN I EXPECTED. I would have thought it to be quicker so if he would of tried it he would have likely gotten nowhere as he lined up with my rear tire and I was completely ready. Once again if I didn't make it clear earlier, it was one of the nicer looking Mercedes Benz models.

This thread was suppose to be about his idiot move and gutter run attempt. Around here thats a jack a**. And the fact that he obviously second guessed his move, which I thought was kinda funny. I guess I should have stressed that.
 
HAHA this is kind of like my XCal thread. Us guys just wanna bitch and jump to conclusions about everything. We all know the MB is better than the LS....DUH! This is a forum where people bull:q:q:q:q. Its kind of like we're just a bunch of LS owners sitten around drinkin beers talkin about our cars. Some LS owners drink Martinis...others prefer a little lager...lol. I was just trying to include all the drinkers of the LS nation....whatever your preference...personally...Im goin with a little lager. lol.

Come to think of it most forums have a lot of arguing going on all the time. Iin fact despite all the controversy on here this is one of the most politically correct, helpful, and friendly forums on the net IMO.
