I have a 92 F-150 with 150K+ on the clock that was doing the same thing. TERRIBLE shudder on the highway when I got on it and the converter locked. For me, just a pan drop and filter with about 6-7 quarts of fluid on the E40D solved that issue entirely.

I totally agree with the Mercon V change over. It is also fully synthetic as opposed to the Merc3. One has to also realize that with the narrow passages in the transmission and tiny little check balls the size of BBs in the valve body and the potential for sticking solenoids, it doesn't take much of a varnish or dirty fluid to emit these type of symptoms over time.
