I bought a car a 2000 lincoln ls v8 in september. With a 125000km in it. It all started 2 days ago when i started my car to warm it up cause live in toronto. At first i didnt notice anything but after my car got warm it started having rough idle but at that time it seemed to go away as soon as pressed the gas.

Anyway when arrived at my destination the check engine light came on. So it seemed to get worse because it was misfiring below 2000rpm as well. But its gotten worse since then cause at 3500rpm it does it.

So i took it to a mechanic to have it scanned it showed missfire cylinder 2 But i know that shop puts in cheap replacement parts so i took it to AAMCO they told me that cylinder number 3 was misfiring and its most likely to be a gasket they told me that for an hour labour they can tell me whats going on with it. But i saw that for a change for a valve cover gasket the wanna charge me 6 hours of labour which would total 1018=tax with parts on the computer but the person did not told me. I saw the quote on his computer.

So i took it to a 3rd shop they told me that it was cylinder number 2 misfirring for 200$ they would fix the coils +parts cause the coils are failing they said. But it took me a good 10 mins to get a price from this guy and he kept saying dont worry i will take care of u something tells me that i would end up paying much more in the end.

So do anyone know a good shop that has experience with this problem with the ls abd its around toronto. Also if the engine is taken appart anyways what tuneups should i have done like change the spark plugs?

And what should i have it replaced with to improve performance?

Anyways sorry for my bad grammar.

Thank you for yours answers in advance.

PS i love my ls to death i dont wanna have it fall into the wrong hands.
And my car doesnt have any problems idling when its cold it doesnt missfire at all. But as soon as the engine gets hot..............it does it no mather what gear its in.

Well - this being your first post.....

the mis-fire on a 2000-2002 LS V8 is very, very common - usually caused by poor valve cover gaskets allowing oil to seep into the spark plug wells. Once that happens, often you also have to replace some coils.

There are 1000 threads on this - everything from how to DIY for $450 to paying the dealership for $1400.

If you open the COP covers (the small cover that goes over the coil-on-plugs) and if there is oil in the spark plug wells - you have to replace the gaskets or the issue will simply keep happening.

We can point you at the technical docs if you are a DIYer. If you are taking it to a shop - make sure to replace all the COPs (not just the mis-firing one) since the labour is 2/3 the pirce of the repair.

How much are the COP each and i need 8 of them right?

I also would like to replace the spark plugs.
Which one is the best plug to go with for performance.
And could also direct me to the store which sells cop for my car.

Is the car driveable like this? Because i need it to go to work today at night and come back home with in the morning. Lets say if i would take it in next week after like 300km after would that be a problem?

And thank u for ur reply

www.rockauto.com has them as cheap as $41/ea

You should not drive it too much - it's hard to say how much driving is safe. the mis-fires are fairly bad if the CEL light came on - often the car mis-fires for a longtime before getting bad enough to turn on the CEL light.

Driving a mis-firing car can lead to damaging the CATs - since un-burned fuel or mis-timed combustion can enter the exhaust.

Partsource just quoted me for 100$ each :( they told me that it would be 800$+tax altogether and they told me that i should never replace all of them at the same time because they rarely go. I will check out the website that u just linked.

right - they are about $100 each dealer pricing.

If you are doing the repairs yourself and want to save some money - then you could just buy one or two coils. Once you confirm that it is leaky valve cover gaskets, and you fix that (with new gaskets), then you can try just cleaning up after the gasket swap and see if the mis-fire goes away (caused by oil and not coils going bad).

Or you can swap the suspected one (#2) and see if the mis-fire goes away (again after fixing the gasket if oil is getting in there). If not then swap a different one until you elliminate the problem.

The issue will be that you could end up swapping coils a few times, taking the car apart a few times - as the mis-fire reading is often not on the cylinder reported.

I took it to a shop and had it taken apart and it was the gasket one of the gaskets are already ruined for sure it was full of oil. My car had this problem once acording to the mechanic. And it wasnt fixed properly because whoever repaired it didnt replace the gasket he just put silicone all around it. Thats why i needed to have it replaced. The other side of the engine is still getting checked out. hopefully i will have better have luck with that.

weak!

i just did this repair. i actually did not have oil leaking out of the valve cover gaskets, they were dry, as were all the plug wells. but to be safe i replaced all 8 spark plugs and coils. ended up costing me a total of $325 - $152 for coils (got the set on eBay, they're not made as well as Motorcraft but work fine), $23 for spark plugs (Bosch Platinum Plus), and $150 in labor. now let's hope that damn misfiring is gone and my cats don't get flooded in rich fuel anymore...
