So, LS has been with my mechanic for a month. All started when the car would not turn over. Diagnosis was the plugs (at first).

1. Replace all plugs, coils, VCG with OEM.

Mechanic noted that there was no compression in some cylinders or not 100%

2. Replace timing chain, timing guide, arms, crankshaft gear, tensioner arms, gaskets, and belt - took a while for parts to arrive as most are on back order.

3. While at it, decided to replace o2 sensors and catalytic sensors.

4. Replace 1 bad valve.

Still won't start. Diagnostic believes to be bad ECU.

5. Replace ECU and reprogram.

Does it make sense that a bad ECU has caused the timing to be f'd up. What causes an ECU to go bad. The codes that came up after all the Coils, etc replaced was that a circuit went bad in the ECU.

Just trying to figure out why ECU went bad and would effect everything.

And I thought it was just the coils and plugs....

sound like the mechanic had you pay for his "fishing expedition".

he just started "throwing" parts at it, without any rhyme or reason..and in the end.. found the actual culprit.. the PCM

Coils, plugs, VC gaskets and the PCM is all I would pay for....
make him eat the rest for doing "crappy diagnostic work".

you likely DID need plugs, coils and VC gaskets...and the PCM was probably the source of the original issue.
The "rest" of the fishing expedition was really stupid.

5 of the 6 coils had oil on them. O2 sensors and catalytic sensors were my choice (car has 104k).

Luckily the timing parts were not too expensive. I guess my car should be running pretty solid now after this repair.

Obligatory "Don't forget the blinker fluid, Johnson rod and muffler bearings" post :p

Parts were about 1300 so far. Everything OEM.

Spark Plugs (all 6) $25.74
Ignition Coils (all 6) $337.98
Valve cover gaskets (left and right) $31.26

Replace Timing Chain $20.22
Replace timing guide $20.58
Replace timing arms $63.30
Replace crankshaft gear $28.19
Replace o2 sensors (2) $128.36
Replace catalytic sensors (2) $123.78
Replace timing chain gaskets $21.92
Replace tensioner arms $81.58
Replace belt $84.82

PCM $400

Problem is that my mechanic could not reprogram the PCM so he had to get it to a lincoln dealership. Called today...got it to start but it is running rough.

Not sure what that means.

hopefully one of your fuel lines isnt cloged, im suprised they havent said that yet.

Glad i dont have a v6!!

The V6's rarely have timing issues from what Ive seen. Not sure why he felt the need to dig into all that, but at least you know it won't break any time soon. My guess is that the timings off by a tooth on the cam. Or the PVC hose is split.

Update:

Got back from the dealer with the PCM reprogrammed. Still running rough with Cylinder 1 throwing the code. Need to dig back in and look into it as I have replaced coil and plug.

At least it starts and runs somewhat.

Is this Safford, LM in Silver Spring? I've had decent results with them in the past. Surpised they havent figured this out.

No. That is where I bought my LS though. I got a quote from them for plugs/coils and VCG and it was about $1500. Ridiculous.

I have a personal mechanic. Got it back today and it is running like new. :D

One of the new OEM coils was defective. Need to send back.
