Well, I am looking at rebuilding the engine in my 2002 LS Sport and would like to know two things. Does anybody have a list of parts (Word or Excel would be great!) needed for a standard 3.9 rebuild? Second, does anyone have the manuals, or basic information to rebuild this particular engine (torque specs, steps, diagrams, 8 x 10 glossies, etc...)? I have rebuilt a couple of engines (350 Chev, 302, 351w) but never dipped my toe into this particular pond?

Thanks.

Have you checked the price of a short block? Or a low-mileage used engine? IMHO that would be much more cost effective than paying for all the pieces individually.

I'd buy a spare motor, buy a paper/rubber rebuild kit, and then see what hard parts you need to worry about. The bottom end bearings are not available from Ford. As best a guess as anyone can come to the Jaguar 4.0 bottom end bearings should work. Maybe some day someone will verify it.

The rest of the parts can be had from Ford although some, like the harmonic balancer/pulley, are a little pricey.

My plan was to buy a used engine but I cannot find one in my area...I did purchase the manuals from EBAY (Thanks for the link!!!). I am assuming that they will help a great deal...at that point (being a little anal) I will be able to make a list (OK maybe a lot!). I think if I do have a bad harmonic dampener I will be having it rebuilt. She's by far my favorite car so like any other member of the family, whatever it takes is just about right!
Thanks again for the link!!!!

I don't get this, buying the books for $100+ yet the DVD software install is $12,
which covers many of other Ford products, including the wiring diagrams and one can do PDF abstracts as well as print.

<shrugs> ... old books are cool I suppose.

I would much rather have the books.
I can put them on the fender of the car and not worry about them falling and shattering. Searching through a book is easier, faster, and less distracting than searching a disk. When I find what I want I don't have to print three copies (inevitably it prints in portrait when it would be more clear in landscape...and then you have to blow up the section you want because it doesn't print clear enough). If they get fluids on them, odds are that they won't get ruined.
I've done the laptop and disk thing...give me the books any day for actual hands-on work! I have my desktop and internet for reference in my garage...although with our cars being somewhat obscure there is not as much information as say for a Chevrolet truck. As for the cost, I paid $225.00+ for college textbooks that I didn't want, so $100.00 for three books that I do want is a bargain! And finally...as you said, old books are cool!

I like to buy the DVD and then just print out the sections I needed at the time. If after I was done doing the work the paper was still in decent shape and not covered in grease/fluid/etc I would 3-hole punch it and put it in a binder. I like the computer for researching and diagnosing but paper is just so much more easier and convenient when actually doing the work.

The problem I have is my memory is crap so I need to have something I can refer back to easily while working. That usually means the information needs to be where i'm doing the work and whatever is on my hands ends up getting on it. That's why I like the DVD as opposed to the book. I do the research, diagnose, then just print out the sections that are relevant to the work i'm doing and away I go.

Got the books today and they are in great shape...you could pretty much rebuild the entire car with these things...it's gonna be a good summer!!!
