Hey guys, my car has always gotten 18-19mpg around town with normal driving ever since I put in my 4.10s. Several days ago, I removed my airbox and installed a cone filter in its place. Now my average mpg with normal town driving is 10-12! So yesterday I put the airbox back on and boom, right back to 18-19 in town. Also, since I put in my 4.10s, at WOT I hit the rev limiter from 1-2 shift. But with the cone filter, no hitting the rev limiter but it will chirp the tires from 1-2. It wouldn't do that with the air box. How would putting the filter down where the air compressor was? How much of an improvement would it be from the air box?

Try cleaning the MAF. You may be breathing better now but the MAF may be too dirty no read it right.

yeah like unity said, I did the same and had bad mpgs, cleaned it and it was better, although after my lms chip install im back down to 9 mpg wtf

I did clean my MAF before and after I put on the cone filter. I'm thinking the filter I put on was too small because after a few miles of driving, I would have a lot of black soot on the tailpipes. I doesn't ever do that when the air box is on the car.

What conical filter setup did you use? You should be using a Cobra conical filter.

If that conical is sucking in the hot air from under the hood you're better off with the air box. The stock air box flows more than these engines will ever take in and it keeps the intake temperatures down. For a conical to be worth it you need some sort of heat shield on it.

I didn't buy the MAF adapter so I tried the K&N cone filter that goes in my 00 f150 air box. The back of the filter is flat so I screwed the MAF to the filter. The inside diameter of the filter and the MAF was the same but the cone I noticed was a little small. I'm gonna leave the air box unless I can find a way to fit a cone down in the hole where the air compressor used to sit. I think blue oval sells the MAF adapters for like $35. Anywhere else sells em?
