So last night I checked out a 97 LSC black on gray interior evryything was clean and worked fine, blend door fixed, air bags repaired already hids worked fine.

only issue was a shuttering of the trans at one point while doing 30mph. only happened once will new fluid fix this?

also when stopped at a light the engine made a sound like a compressor kicked in, happened 2x, is this normal the ac was not on only heater.

92k miles
clean
new tires, brakes, etc.. all records and 2nd owner $4200 is the best price what do you guys think, it will come with a nice kenwood system and remote start ipod hookup etc..

Price sounds a little high but not unreasonable.

The compressor sound is the air ride compressor airing the car up. Remember the car lowers itself at highway speeds so if you are coming to a light, then you hear the bags being inflated.

As for the trans shudder, some have had luck changing to mercon V, some have not. Its a 50/50 shot if it will work. You might check the fluid color, the dipstick in between the engine and the firewall. Its hard to find but if the color is nice and red, then they changed it and it didnt fix it. If its orange or brownish, you might get lucky with a fluid flush

Hope that helps good luck

too much for $4200 with tranny problems...I'll never buy a car with tranny problem because once it goes you'll have to throw fat stacks of cash at it....try finding cars that's worth $10,000 with tranny not working, it'll be sold for alot less I bet and maybe you might get it for $4,200 and you just have to throw a tranny in it...you can't say fluid change will fix it because YOU'LL NEVER KNOW until it's changed and driven...he want to sell it for $4,200 he should better fix that shutter

if the trans fluid change does not work then what am I looking at a trans rebuild? or is there another fix for the shudder? it was not slipping or skipping etc, it shifted good in all gears it just shuddered once. thanks again

Get the fluid changed, then add "LubeGard Dr Tranny Instant Shudder fix"-it's a small red tube that completely takes care of the shudder, i've used it on 4R70W's on 4 seperate Fords. Never blew a tranny.

$4200 is alot, i'd get him to $3900-4000. The compressor kicking in is normal, i've had 2 Mark's and i always get the comment "wtf is that?" from passengers lol, it's funny.

All the Ford's i've driven had that annoying shudder at around 35mph, it's a quick fix. Now if it was slipping, i'd be worried.

where can I get that lube guard fluid? autozone? thanks.. this shudder is what is preventing me from giving him a deposit

take the owner and the car on a test ride to a trans shop.

have one of the guys take a ride with you and give you a ball park estimate on repair.

then deduct that amount from his price.
if I'm correct the trans shop will quote you 1700-2000 dollars to fix that.

THEN...buy the car, run down to autozone and follow the directions you see above in this thread...it's a simple fix.

The owner has the car priced too high considering a possible trans issue.
chances ARE a swap to Mercron 5 will cure it, but..it IS a gamble.
do you want to gamble with your money, or the guy selling the cars money.

If you're feeling generous, offer him 3K for the car after ya'll ride to the trans shop.

They're asking too much.

The shutter can be any number of things. Are you sure it's a transmission shutter or something else? It could even be ignition or a misfire.

And unless you were doing a lot of driving over 65mph, that air ride is kicking on too much.

Unless you're looking forward to working on the car, keep looking.

positive about the shudder, it is as described in the tech article like you are going over bumps on the highway shoulder... and it lasted only 1 second and it only happened only once.

.

this is true...
back in 2000-2001 my 95 started shuttering.
I was convinced it was trans, it was the exact rumblestrip feeling described in the tech article.

swapped to mercron 5, no change.

After a month or so, I had accepted my trans was wounded and chunked new plugs and wires at it as it was time.

low and behold the shutter completly went away

hahaha Rich got me good lol.

Usually Autobarn, Advance hardware or similair sells the product, never seen it at Autozone or pep boys.

That shudder at 30-35 and around 60-65 means you need merc 5 (which shops NEVER put in). They'll lie to you, they usually add a friction modifier from lubegard.

The 4 times i used the lubegard shudder fix, the shudder completely disappeared after 10 miles of driving. The shudder always reappears around 20-25k miles later, then you get the fluid changed, then buy more lubegard to put in.
