2000 LS V6 Auto. THE BIG QUESTION, Would the dash still display P,R,N,D,1,2,3,4 correctly if it had a bad range sensor. Does the signal for the dash readout come from the shift handle or the sensor?

Both.
Most of it comes from the digital range sensor. There are a few micro switches on the shifter inside. They are used for the 3/4 or + - and also as a sanity check on the park position.
So, if the range sensor is bad, it should not be possible to correctly display all of the gear positions.
