Hello all, I've been a lurker for a little while. I have a serious issue with my 95 Lincoln Mark VIII. I simply cannot get it to fire. It started last week, it couldn't get it to fire. I thought I didn't hear the fuel pump turn on at all at the time. A friend and I put it in the garage and before we could really do anything, I tried starting it and it actually fired up. I let it run for awhile, to cold to drive and get stuck outside I left it in the garage. I kept a routine of starting it for a few days and letting it run. I figured it wasn't quite warm enough to take it for a spin yet. Well I let it sit a few days (2-3) and I didn't start it once. I came back to start it a few days later and I still cannot get it to fire some days later.

The fuel pump does turn on, the inertia switch is fine, I have 40psi of fuel pressure. I have little over half a tank of gas and I added Heet to make sure my gas wasn't frozen (the fuel pressure is sign I guess it is not). Last time we hooked up a computer and the only error code I received was a Secondary Circuit error on the Fuel Pump or something along those lines. I don't have access to the code scanner again at the moment so I don't know what it is saying now. The battery is brand new I actually replaced it 2 weeks before this all started happening. Anyone have any ideas on what to look for or try?

Regards,

Good chance is may be the crank position sensor. Its well know to casue this. Located at the bottom of the block at the front passenger side. You will need a light to see it. Its a squeeze plug (squeeze to unplug). Next time it does not start simply unplug it and plug it back in. Dont back the plug off to far, just enough to disconnect it - it can be a little tricky getting back on your first time.

Fuel is not the problem unless the pump is being intermittent.

40 PSI is ok, but seems a hair high. May want to look ar replacing the fuel pressure regulator if its original.

Try another battery maybe. The Mark needs FULL power to start. If its cold there like it is here, then that may be your problem. My Mark did not start last weekend until I jammed a heat gun into the throttle body and heated the intake plenum! I also put the battery on a charger over-night.

Maybe the MAF? COuld try cleaning it with electric parts cleaner - non-filming.

Tis all I can think of!

I'd look at the crank sensor for sure. $10 part, just replace it.

But I would also look at the plugs. If the gap is worn, the cold start condition will cause the engine to flood.

I chased this one a while until I found the plug issue.

Especially with the platinum plugs from the factory that people haven't changed for a 100,000 miles.

Thanks guys I tried a few things today. My problem should be somewhat limited now I guess, I tried to see if I could get a fire from a plug on the coil and didn't receive anything. The Coil is supplied power and I tested Ohms across the coil to verify it was ok (I guess that is how I was supposed to test?). Seemed fine according to the numbers. I tried to unplug and plug the crank sensor back in. Is there a way to test the sensor itself? I guess I can just buy one anyhow, hooked up a code scanner and received the following:

Key On Engine On:
116 - Coolant temp. sender out of self-test range
335 - EGR voltage out of range
636 - Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) not at expected value

Key On Engine Running
10 - Wasn't defined online it seems to be: Cylinder 1 low during cylinder balance test

Should the sensor show up in the code list? Seems like I have a few other things to fix as well, heh. I'm not much of an automotive person, so very big thanks guys.
