hello everyone, i am currently car shopping for a new vehicle, figured i could get some answers on this forum. anyway, i pretty much came down to finding a lincoln ls for myself, seems like the optimal type of a car for me, sporty yet still elegant, i want to buy a v8 maybe a 2002? anyway, so far ive been doing alot of research on the car and some of the negatives come down to transmission going bad which could be a pricy fix, problems with headlights power windows, door locks....my friend used to have one, the only thing went wrong with his before he sold it was a window motor for the drivers window, anyway...i am skeptical now about getting one of these...but i just wanted one so damn bad....
any suggestions ? :/

i agree with getting a 2003+ LS. i have an 02 V8 myself and it seems like i am always having to fix something. dont get me wrong i love the car but it has its share of problems. best of luck
 
Just as a word to the wise....

If you can barely afford a genII then this may not be the car for you. This is a luxury vehicle which isn't cheap to maintain, especially so for first gen's. Not trying to put you off on these cars. They are an amazing value in today's market. You just need to realize getting one can only be half the battle sometimes

Absolutely true. On average, these were $40K cars when new (my 06 sticker was $49K, but I got it for $40K). Expensive cars cost more to maintain and repair that cheap ones.

If you can afford it, get an 05 or an 06. The 04 weren't too bad. The 03s were okay, but they had a few more problems than the 04s, and the 04s and a couple more problems than the 05s.


I've not heard of any headlight problems, except maybe a one-off or two.
The window regulators do break over time, but that (unfortunately) is true of many cars since everyone switched to the cable type regulator.
COPs (Coil On Plug) fail more often than they should, as does the DCCV and a solenoid valve in the transmission.
Over all, my 06 has been the most trouble free car that I've had, and that includes some Grand Marquis (a car known to be pretty reliable).
 
Ive owned plenty of cars ALL CARS HAVE PROBLEMS, but like they said the LS isnt a cheap car to maintain but for what you pay for the LS luxury car as opposed to other cars that are luxury you cant beat it IMO.
 
You get a lot of car for the money but its gotta be maintained and fixed properly.
 
I got my 06 sport for 11,995 with 73k on it. I'm freaking loving it. But to beat a dead horse here, get an 04 or newer. More power and lots of bugs worked out.

I've only had mine for a couple months now and am loving it. It's FAST. I like that. :) Beats the tar out of my Mark VIII I used to dump money into.
 
the good news is that, almost all LS'es have the same problems, and most are easy to fix yourself (if you know what your doing with a wrench)

being able to fix it yourself makes the repair bills much much cheaper, however some of the parts are pretty expensive themselves.
 
You should try getting an 03 or above to avoid some problems. I have an 02 v8 and love the car to death, but it seems like every time I fix something another issue comes up... Now I need new ball joints and my driver side door no longer wants to lock.. I put that on the to do list! But I don't think there is any better performing or good looking car on the road today that can compare to the LS for the value you get. My LS has a 183,00 miles on her and she still runs like new and will blow away most cars that pull up to me! What can I say, most of us are in love with these cars no matter what problem they give us.

Yep get use to it!

Bought my 2000 Lincoln LS v8 Sport with 129k Miles on it..
It now has 130k and Ive already spent Upwards of 2000 Fixing Shizz...

Replaced :
Torque Converter
Seconday Timing Chain Tensioners
Cyl 6 and 7 COPs
Cyl 6 and 7 Spark Plugs
Exhaust Cam timing jumped.

Still Needs :

New Windsheild ( My bad not the cars lol )
Overheating Problem.. Just started happening ..
Clockspring
AND
Possibly a new engine within a year..



Make your choice..

If you do get a LS..
Do your research on the car. Make sure it was very well taken care of before.. Even if it is.. Let a mechanic go through it.. Do Several test drives..
Dont be stuck where I am in a hole with this car..
 
Well not to be a dck. But maybe you should have done a little more shopping before you pulled the trigger on that cursed LS. I've put 7k on my LSE since January and only replaced normal wear and tear items and still couldn't be happier.

Its all about that particular LS, past drivers, and well.. current drivers. Maintenance is everything. Your LS had at least a 39k price tag. Expect to pay more for parts..its the way of Luxury. That is why you bought an LS right?
 
A lot of other cheaper cars cost the same to maintain or even more.

It cost $150 to get a new key for a 2003 nissan altima programmed while for the LS you can get it done for $90.

And gen I had the most problems.
 
^ But if the Gen1 has been maintained properly. She runs like a top. Besides the fact I have no a/c (needs a re-charge thanks to joegr helping me solve the issue).

The Gen1 has its benefits over the Gen2s imo however Gen1 > Gen2
