2003 Lincoln LS V8
2003 Lincoln LS V8. I was visiting my parents yesterday and we were coming back from my land over in Arkansas. When we came over a bridge over the Arkansas River (I-540E for those familiar with the area) we were passing the truck, kinda easy since we weren't in a hurry and there was no traffic backing up behind us. Anyway, we're just about to pass the trailer when all of a sudden this HUGE looking thing comes flying out through between the trailer floor and the steel bar that prevents cars from going under the trailer, spinning like a propeller. It hits the Lincoln on the right front fender taking a huge hunk out of the right front wheel and gouging the crap out of the tire's sidewall. It also smacked into the fender and messed up some other stuff. It was amazing at how well the car took the hit, because aside from the loud vibration you get when a tire blows the car still handled fine. Since the wheel was toast anyway I shot in front of the semi and forced him off the road.

Turns out that the trailer had a busted leaf spring, and it decided to come off as we were passing the trailer. The state trooper that responded actually found the leaf on the bridge. The guy was written up for defective gear and sent on his way. My car was towed to a local repair shop (I live in Tulsa but grew up in Van Buren AR, and that's where my family is) as it's not currently drivable. The initial repair estimate is 4800 bucks. My insurance company has already said to begin repairs, but it's going to be on the truck driver's insurance to pay the ultimate bill. USAA, my insurance company, is pretty good about just slapping down the cash to get their customers back on the road as quickly as possible, then settling the money out after the fact. And, the truck driver said he was going to have some very unpleasant words with the safety manager that is supposed to be taking care of the trailers because the trailer had apparently just passed an inspection. The leaf spring had obviously been broken for a while.

I gotta say, I'm pretty lucky on how it went down. Had that leaf gone just a bit higher it would have gone through the windshield. Either I'd now be arranging two funerals as my dad was in the passenger seat and my mom was directly behind him, or I'd be getting prepped for one myself. If that leaf spring had come through the windshield it would have been found in the trunk. Danged thing was the overload spring, and it was about a foot and a half long, 4 inches wide and 3/4 or so inch thick. I'm sure any truckers here could give the correct dimensions. It broke right at the axle shackle on the front side of the trailer, passenger side. I have some videos, will post as soon as I figure out how to get them off the phone.

I was very surprised at how stable the car handled after the impact as well. Completely predictable, and aside from the loud noise from the blown tire I really didn't feel any handling problems aside from a bit of vibration through the steering wheel. I bet it woulda flipped a front wheel drive crackerbox though.

Speaking of front wheel drive crackerboxes, I am driving a Dodge Avenger for a rental until the Lincoln is repaired. It really blows. Under full throttle it accelerates about like the LS does when I'm in no hurry, yet somehow still manages to impart torque steer. It's really making me rethink whether or not I want a Charger now. When the time comes I'm going to make sure to rent a Charger before buying just to make sure it's not a POS like the Avenger is. I will say this for the Avenger though, seems to do an excellent job at soaking up the bumps. It almost rides as smoothly as the LS does.

Glad all is well (in the big picture)... Although 5 star crash ratings probably don't matter to much with flying debris lol... Im sure it played a part in keeping you safe. No hiding a safe built car!... make sure the insurance company knows those were Senta's on the car that were damaged :p

Heh heh... I'm just getting it put back like it was although I am going to fork over some of my own money to get a few other paint spots fixed seeing as it'll be in the shop anway.

Forgot to add, any leaf spring can do this so anyone here with a leaf sprung truck, it would be worthwhile to give the 'ol leafs a once over on a regular basis. You don't want to be that guy.

Daaaaaaamn. You dodged a bullet--or a spear--on that one; I'm glad to hear nobody was injured!

Definitely could have been a dangerous situation. Glad to hear no one is hurt.

Happy to hear you guys made out safely.

DOT is extremely strict around here. I am surprised they didn't catch it.

I know someone who was pulled over for checkup and they found a cracked leaf spring on his truck - older 10 wheeler. They gave him $3000(i think it was more) in fines and had the owner tow it straight to the shop.

Now i know why it's so important to stay on top of that.

Thanks, definitely glad there were no injuries. I have some short videos showing the car, the broken leaf on the trailer and the piece the cop found, will put them up once I figure out how to get them off the phone. Pucker factor was super intense. What I saw was a 6 foot steel bar propellering its way towards the windshield that came right out of that opening between the bed of the trailer and the steel bar that prevents cars from driving under the trailer. It's amazing at just how much your eyes magnify things in those situations because the bar was actually only about 1 foot long.

I worked an accident recently where a semi truck had 5 non functioning brakes. I don't trust those things anymore.

I am glad to hear that you have USAA, I have them myself and as far as I know they are awesome for car insurance, they have always handled things for me very quickly.

Glad you are okay, we had bad rain storms here last night and today and I've worked 3 wrecks just today, some haven't been so fortunate as you. I will tell you this, a Plymouth Breeze is probably one of the most dangerous cars on the road.

However as far as the LS goes, I've never seen one wrecked but I haven't heard bad things. I do know that the last generation Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner is built like a tank. Had some lady roll hers a month ago and just crawled out of the window completely unhurt and one today took a head on collision at 55 like a boss, she also just got out like "WTF just happened"

Ford makes some damn good cars.

LMAO
Accident scenes aren't funny, just the way you put it.

That's the Volvo safety getting into Ford. When they bought Volvo they just used all Volvo's safety facilities as they were so good. They bought volvo in 1999 so I'm not sure how much Volvo safety went into the LS. It was also the Jaguar platform so they may have been developed using Volvo's safety facilities. Most new Ford products are built on Volvo chassis. The MKZ is a S80 and the Mazda 3, S40 and European focus were the same chassis. The MKS is also based on a s80.

Umm, no. The LS predates Ford's acquisition of Volvo, and has no Volvo DNA. Its safety is all Ford's doing.

Why do you say that? Volvo was purchased in February 1999. They developed the LS starting in 1998, those frame reinforcements were added in the middle of the 2000 model year. I know for a fact they used volvos safety facilites for crash testing. The basic design started in 98 but crash testing would have been near the end of the development. Yes, most development would have been done by ford engineers but some safety refinements could have been done at their facilities.

Ford bought Volvo in January, 1999; the LS went on sale in May, 1999. The chassis was set well before they bought Volvo; there simply wasn't enough time for Volvo engineering to be integrated enough into Ford to have had a significant impact on the safety of the DEW98 chassis.

Edit: I will agree that it's possible that Volvo engineering was involved in some of the iterative safety enhancements over the life of the platform; however, I'm pretty sure the LS maintained a 5-star crash rating throughout its lifetime, so I wouldn't give them a whole lot of credit for its safety. And this was just sheer dumb luck that the spring hit a fender and a wheel instead of going through the windshield (as noted by the OP). Regardless of origin, the safety equipment/structures of the LS really didn't come into play. The Lincoln/Jaguar suspension/chassis engineering was far more important, IMHO.

Just got a call from the insurance company today. The appraiser was out and approved all repairs. Work can now proceed. I did ask what it would cost to just repaint the whole car, but it would add 4000 to the cost of the job out of my pocket. Unfortunately my funds are a bit too low right now to justify 4 grand for a car I plan to sell next year. A stroke of luck, the painter that will be doing the work is one of the best in the area. The same guy fixed a problem with my dad's 97 El Dorado STS ETC which was painted with that three stage reddish colored paint. My dad, who can pick out flaws from the highway that I can't pick out with a magnifying glass, couldn't tell what side the guy worked on. If all goes well, when the work is finished I shouldn't be able to tell where the damage was. I hope and pray the work's done soon too, because I'm already SICK of that f&&king Dodge Avenger!!!!! I ABSOLUTELY HATE FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS!!!

I can sympathize with you on that--my LS spent over a week in the shop this last winter because a #%^*ing raccoon ran out in front of my car while I was doing 75 on the Turner Turnpike--busted the lower air dam and shoved the passenger-side lower corner of the radiator back into the AC condenser (the damage came to just over $2200). It didn't take them long to do the work, but it took several days to get the parts.

Hopefully your repairs go quicker than mine did...

my dad's 97 El Dorado STS ETC
its one or the other, 2 doors = ETC = Eldorado Touring Coupe or 4 doors = STS = Seville Touring Sedan

dude, i dont know to feel sorrier for, that your LS got smashed final destination style, or that your stuck driving an Avenger around (hell at least its American), glad yall made it out all safely.

Telco,
Sorry to hear, glad everyone is ok, not meant to happen .. but it does.

Nice enough looking car, but hated driving it. Just can't stand front wheel drives.

Telco,

Thanks, and check your springs when you get back to work. :shifty: :D

Ouch, sorry to hear. Having a rental sucks!!!!!! But atleast it makes driving your ls that much sweeter.
