Let's talk LEDs & Load Resistors please

Hmm, got ya!
I knew the gold/silver band thing was a +/- tolerance, remembered that from my soldering days.

Interesting, Ok thanks!

that is the top mount brake light, which is something I'm diggin in to as well, best for me
to just salvage one of those GEN II's and make it work.

and yes, it's my series of LED's in the trunk I need to stop from glowing when off.
I plan to solder that whole string together later today, try some readings on it when lit.
then attempt your math to see what it's pulling.

I picked up, 10W, 47 Ohm & 100 Ohm @ 5% yesterday just for fun because they were two for 1.99 each package.

Just shooting in the dark here, like I said, will be attempting the math later to see what I need.

Thanks Joe & G

just in case you need help with the math

if only it was that simple.

It's Chinese math G !

I already got my people working on it ... of course I had to out source it.

...
R (resistance) = (V-2) / I
P (power) = V^2 / R (where V = 14.5 volts this time)

Assume (guess) a sense current of 10 mA (0.01 A) (it's probably less than this)

Assume a min voltage of 6 volts (no bets on this one)

R = 4 / 0.01 = 400 ohms

P = 210.25 / 400 = 0.5256, so double that and you need a 1 watt resistor at 400 ohms.

My superior soldering and heat shrink tubing skills ... going into the trunk this afternoon.

load resistors is my biggest problem, although I read on another site if you put the standard bulb back inline it stops the problem.

PS: don't mind the dirty carpeting, wife is on strike!

I left the "standard" bulb in when I added extra LED lighting to the trunks of both of mine. They don't glow when off. If they did, I wouldn't care. When the trunk's closed, no one can see anyway. (No live bodies in the trunk.)

I know joe, I tested that however it was my backup bulbs also, even flickered.
I don't want to give up on this GEN I LED's but for me, the bulbs have to go out when off.
Trunk perhaps not so much of an issue but getting out of the car, locking it up and seeing
my plate and backup bulbs lightly dimmed on bugs the hell out of me.

I removed the backup bulbs, plates are still LED and they do go out after 30min. but I'm determined to find a solution.
May even try some different LED's, some of the newer ones.

Different LEDs are very unlikely to solve this. Load resistors certainly will.

A 24 ohm 10 watt resistor (don't want wire wound resistors) would simulate a 6 Watt bulb and should surely stop the after glow. However, the higher resistance value that will work the better as you will be wasting less power and generating less heat.

Other values to try...

50 ohms at 5 watts (2.88 watts used)

100 ohms at 5 watts (1.44 watts used)

500 ohms at 1/2 watts (0.288 watts used)

My Lic Plate lights go out right away - VLEDS

So far the only ones that stay dim are my puddles and trunk. Neither of which bother me.

That's what M4rk was saying, however,
there seems to be a difference between GEN I & II in it's behavior with regards to LED's.

GEN I License Plate Light Bulb Size: 2825 (same as 194 but CANBUS proof or not)

I had bought these cheap things,

Hinzy, I have the same plate LEDs, but mine have the glow.. WTF? On the other hand, my puddle lamps don't.

my walmart only has the blue ones damn it! oh well.

http://www.carid.com/2005-lincoln-ls-led-lights/lumen-led-lights-3131442.htm would i need a resistor to run these for my rear turn signals? or will these be ok and wont show a CEL?

sorry, the link doesnt want to load for some reason but it is a 3157 -LUMEN® - Turn Signal LED Bulbs. not sure about these so if anyone has info that would be great

I don't know near enough about LED's but I do know for a GEN I LS on a 3157 your going to run into troubles. I ditched my 3156 ambers and my 3157 I used for back ups on my GEN I LS stay lightly dimmed. ( I did buy some cheap no brands though )

Have a look around some more, if you search is exhausted or you simply can't get them there,
I could be convinced to ship you a package. ( trouble is shipping from Canada to US is not free )

----EDIT:

Seems like a Canadian product, by Alpena --> http://www.alpena.ca/

and they only showcase the blue ones --> http://www.alpena.ca/category.aspx?catid=65

yet at the Walmart near me, they had all colors. Green, Blue, Amber, Purple and White.

----EDIT(2)

Would these not work for you: http://www.walmart.com/ip/CIPA-EVO-Formance-15-LED-Ultrabrights-White/17806030

----EDIT(3)

Here you go: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/ac...-25cd?itemIdentifier=60064&_requestid=1072375

That should work.
