Need at least 5 responses here. This is the point, list how much you payed for the car plus the amount you have spent on upgrades and repairs, then list what you have or expect to sell it for. Lets try to crunch some simple math and see how expensive these bad boys really are and then compare the owners cost to that of a low end car like a cavalier and then to a high end car like a 528 BMW or a Audi S4.

I'll go first.

2000 LS V6 edition purchased 19 months ago $5,000 (63,000 miles)
Modifications: component system $1,500
18'' chrome rims $1,000
Quad Mufflers $330
Interior Lights $60
Window Tint $150
Repairs: Ignition Coils, VCG's and Fuel Injector $1500
Routine Brake Maint (pads Rotors) $200
Oil Changes and filters ($35x10) $350
Cabin Filter (I got ripped :( off) $80
Broken Drivers Side Door $50
Broken Third Brake Housing and Brake Lights $40
_______
Total Invested So far $10,260

I recognize that the $5,000 I paid was a good deal and hope to get $6,000 when I sell it (haven't decided if I'll take the system and rims with me or not yet) but I'd say that the maintenance hasn't been terrible, but when something does go wrong its on the pricey side. Basically I want to see how much money you guys have lost to the LS that isnt coming back and see if owning something like a cavalier would be a high percentage cheaper (given the gas situation. Okay, somebody respond ... don't leave a brother hangin'

2003 LS V8 Sport $27000 (14k miles)
no repair cost,warranty
window tint $ 200
tinted taillights 100 (i think, it was done by jon's tinted tails and i can't remember)
Flowmaster exhaust 100
besides that just oil changes every 5k km
oh yeah LSE grill $150

2001 Lincoln LS V6. Purchased for 4,000 dollars with 36,000 miles.

Modifications:
New LSE Grille - 20 dollars
Tint - 180 dollars

Repairs:
Overheating - 1000
Replacing some electrical/headlight - 700
New transmission - 3600 (Around there)

I owned it for...5-6 months before selling it for a Honda Element SC.

Any economy car will cost less to own than a luxury car. It seems people here forget the LS is a luxury car and not a gussied-up Mustang.

You need to consider deprecation, insurance, cost of fuel/milage, and resale value also.

i'm lucky if i get 5k when/if i sell it. but i doubt i would, the car means a lot to me

Car use

There're only two ways to run a car. Either start new and trade every two years, or keep it virtually forever. I bought my '02 Sport new and will keep it for the forseeable future. I'm having too much fun racing it.

I've had my '63 F-100 ICB since 1989.

2 ways to buy a car: If you want brand new, lease it. If you dont like leaseing, want to modify or just want to keep it. Then buy it pre-owned between 6 months to 2 years old. Buy it at the depriciated value then trade it in 2 years.

Purchased my 2000 V8 Sport for $16,000 with 49K on the odometer.

Right now I'm hitting about 135K miles and have replaced:

* Driver's side ball joint & knuckle ( $200.00 ) from junkyard with labor
* Front driver's side hub bearing. ( $290.00 ) w/ labor @ dealer
* Front main seal from hitting speedbump ( $430.00 ) mostly all labor at dealer!
* Replace 3 coils( $60 on ebay ) plus ($35) labor at shop. Will replace all soon.
* Front passenger side hub bearing ( $190.00 ) w/ labor from shop.
* Replaced rotors for slotted/drilled from R1 on ebay. ( $ 210.00 ) plus ($50.00 labor from shop )

So far it's been okay. But currently it does have some issues. I hope replacing all the coils will resolve some of them. If I need to replace the tranny, then I'd say the car would probably be a ball buster @ 135K! But the good thing is that it's paid for and I'm only paying 55 bucks in insurance a month for two vehicles. Can't beat that! :)

scjmc: why don't you find a place that offers lifetime alignments? I mean, 300 bucks for 3 alignments is quite a bit of cash. Places like firestone charge about 140 bucks for lifetime of your ownership of vehicle.
