So I did a search and couldn't find anything.. It's been forever since I did a remote start in one of these so I can't remember, is this the old Pats system or the 'newer' pats system. Basically I need a spare key, just got the car and only had one key. -Chris

what year mark viii?
i know with my 93 you can just have someone copy the key and all is well.
edit: 98 maybe cuz of the user name? well then, i dunno about that.

PROGRAMMING
I know the manual says that you need 2 programmed keys to add another, but on a feeling I tried the old method: Insert programmed key in ignition and turn to run but do not start engine. Turn off and remove key. Within 15 seconds, insert new key and turn to run but DO NOT START ENGINE. Antitheft light should be on and not blinking. Turn off ignition. New key is now programmed.
EDIT--After a bit of research, 97s have what's called PATS I. This means that if there is at least ONE programmed key in memory, you can program up to 6 more keys into memory (The 2 from the factory + the 6 you can do.) By what I can tell, 98s have the PATS II which have to have 2 programmed keys to be able to program the others. Reference: http://www.1-800-pdq-keys.com/news.htm

here's some stuff to read.

you can usually find them on craigslist or eBay for around $70each

Oh yeah sorry it's a '98. I remember those being weird pain in the ass years for anti-theft (96-99) I remember doing a '98 Stang (new at the time) with a 555 module and wouldn't program like it was supposed to (Pats I) with the single key, spent like 4 hours on it grrr, found out later it was actually Pats II. I was just wondering if anyone had any first hand experience. I'm guessing it's Pats II as it was one of the last few built....and I'm sure the actual round Lincoln keys are long gone. Are the frequencies different between the two or just programming? I know the Focus and cougar were actually totally different, at least the bypass mod was, key looked the same. I just don't want to waste $ on a key that won't program. Thanks! -Chris

Thanks for that link Chris...should have read that first. It's what I was kind of figuring, 97 is I 98 is II.

losing keys on this new stuff sucks. we had to get new keys for my mom's LS and getting them programmed became a chore. im pretty sure we ended up having the dealership do it when it was in there for some other PATS problem.

on a 93 for a remote sart not need for a key abut on the gen 2 U have to have a spare key it goes into a bypass module the 556u and thats a blk box that tells the computer that theres a key in the ing niton and to tell it to start...bhal blah its hard detail unless ur into installing and car audioe... yes u can get a key off ebay for 50.00 and 6.oo shipping
